Selena Quintanilla Essay
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, better known as simply Selena. Selena was a very well known Mexican-American songwriter and singer, topping the charts and earning the title of top latin artist in the 90’s. Selena was the youngest member of her family, having one older sister and an older brother. She debuted her way in the music world in 1980 in a band consisting of her siblings, managed by her father. In two years her music career broaded into the professional world where she was confronted with many obstacles due to the fact the the genre of Tejano music was male dominated and most venues refused her, but her popularity grew in 1986 with her famous award of winning best female vocalist of the year from the Tejano Music Awards, in which she continued

Selena had been faced with so many hardships in her life and she is such a great example of someone who just worked hard and overcame her troubles and proved the world that she could achieve greatness if she wanted to. I think that is a message that many people need in their everyday lives, even if they live a simple life. Every single person comes across hard times in their lives and they need to be able to look up to someone who had been through that and say, if they did that then I can do this. I think due to the diversity of Selena’s problems throughout her entire life everyone could relate to her in some way. Selena went through rough times with her family due to her father being her manager, she faced problems with sexual discrimination, as well as with the hardships of conflict with family friends, all of these things that everyday people can relate to. Selena is also the perfect example of a strong woman and a successful woman as well. Even today it can be hard for women to be treated equally, such as the work force, so to see her achieve such greatness, especially in a genre that was dominated by men, it just feeds inspiration for women and proves that women can do anything. I think the way Selena was taken from this world was very tragic and awful; she was such an icon for so many people
