1912 was just born. All six of the gang were, like usual, sitting by the town’s post office’s compound wall, neatly dressed, and waiting for the ladies to come out of the neighbouring tailoring class. And Andy in particular, was certainly the most nervous amongst them six. He had decided that he was going to talk to her that day. And for this one meeting, he had written, rewritten and practiced a baker’s dozen times, what he was going to say to her. But the moment she came out with her friends, the moment he saw her, he went blank. Lucille and her friends walked past the gang and as Andy had hoped, Lucille was walking in the extreme left, farthest from him. He walked up to her from behind and called her. She turned…

While lying on the grass in the front yard, I imagined the exciting night ahead. Before long, Taylor and his girlfriend, Kara, arrived and picked me up. Almost immediately, I stood up and sauntered in my Duke sweatshirt and basketball shorts over to their car. I jumped into the backseat. Immediately, I was assaulted with the strong smell of perfume that had been sprayed inside the car because it belonged to Kara. Tonight instead of driving, she decided to let Taylor drive illegally without a license. As we drove off to Erik’s house, the rendezvous for tonight’s “Goatman” adventure, we saw a police officer had just pulled a car over. As we drove by, we breathe easier and relaxed because we didn’t see any more cops on the way.…

Jennifer Thompson was a straight-A student at Elon University in Burlington, North Carolina. She had her life all planned out: maintain straight A’s, graduate with a 4.0 GPA, and marry her boyfriend, Paul. Jennifer said frightened “Who is that? Whose there?” I said, “Allowing myself to think it must be Paul, or someone playing a stupid joke” (12). Then suddenly she looked and saw a stranger in her room. Before she knew it, she was getting raped. During her attack, she made sure she paid attention to her attacker’s features and his voice. The rapist began to hiss “Shut up or I’ll cut you!” he hissed, “while clamping a glove hand down her mouth” (12). He proceeded to brutally rape her, with a knife at her throat. “I’m afraid of knives.” I told him, “I can’t relax until you put it down. Can you put it outside? On my car?” (15-16). Jennifer stayed as calm as possible, trying to remember as many details about her assailant as she could, until she managed to escape. She tried staying calm and having conversations with this man and stayed calm the entire time. When she had the chance and knew he wasn’t there she began to run and was shouting for help. As she ran screaming to the top of her lungs a nice family opened the door and let her in. They took care of Jennifer and took her to the hospital. Through an inept summary and analysis of Picking Cotton, readers will be able to understand key points throughout the book, and determine why or why not they should pursue reading the book.…

Power is an entity in its self that can bring about an array of perks, while also giving way to drawbacks and responsibilities. To many, power is acknowledged as a tool, an item of possession, to do freely what they want and when they want. However power often times to none can bring about more harm than good. It can distort the character and persona of those who become a victim to its overriding power. The continual pursuit of power can often take us over, trapping us in it merciless web. Power can grow within us, to the extent of running our very lives and determining our thoughts, causing us to become slaves to it. Thus, it is my view that, the concept of power entrapping and freedom being brought out from disempowerment can be seen in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (HOD) as well as ‘V for Vendetta’ and ‘Dances With Wolves.’…

We are surrounded by unexplainable horrors: gang violence and murder; hurricanes and other natural disasters cause hundreds of casualties; giant passenger planes crash into the ocean and hundreds die terrifying deaths. Justice and our search for moral peace seemingly require us to find an answer for these tragedies even though we subconsciously know that conclusive answers may not exist. Nonetheless, we need to blame someone. The courts often cannot decisively resolve who is to blame and even when there is closure, we generally have no cure other than imprisonment or compensation to make things right again. Efforts to assign blame often lead to suffering while the failure to make the effort leads to some lasting damage to the soul, both individual and communal. Thus, we seem to have no choice even though we understand that moral peace will not be found either way. This struggle to assign blame, responsibility and liability is the core of The Sweet Hereafter. The book was inspired by a 1989 school bus crash in south Texas which took the lives of 21 children, initiated multiple lawsuits and, in some ways, destroyed a community. In The Sweet Hereafter, Banks examines blame, responsibility, liability, lawyers, truth, greed, and the implications of community as a result of the tragedy. This horrific and unexpected event brings to light the moral implications of tragedy while questioning communal and personal responses to that tragedy.…

Every day people are often seen committing good, kind, and helpful acts while others are found committing acts of evil. One doesn't think, though, of the possibility that those who often do good would rash out in evil acts for no apparent reason at all. It is human nature to simply go along in every day life, knowing right from wrong, knowing the results and consequences of certain acts, and assuming anyone with a different idea is insane. In The Child by Tiger by Thomas Wolfe, a lesson about man's darker side is taught through explorations of imagery, death, and human behavior. By means of these explorations, the reader can then see how humans are capable of losing touch with reality, taking light of killing, and releasing the evil which lies deep within.…

Hardy's Tess has more dreadful things befall her by pure happenstance than most other literary figures of her time. One may say that the parson's revelation of the Durbeyfield's true lineage reveals the instance that causes the rest of the plot to appear feasible. However precipitous that even may have seemed, the accidental skewering of the Durbeyfield's only horse leads to more mishap then any other single event in the text. Tess's rape by Alec Stokes, in the last pages of Phase the First, paves the way for endless reoccurrences of ill happenings throughout the rest of the text. These occurrences may lead the reader to believe, not incorrectly, that much of the rest of the novel contains a great deal of awful events.…
