The second guiding principle is empowerment. Empowerment is important in chronic illness care as it give the patient the confidence in providing their own care. If she is a visual learner then the nurse may be able to provide her with pictured instructions of how to check her own blood glucose levels, administer her insulin and which foods she should avoid to prevent exacerbating her crohns disease. If Emily is an auditory learner then by thoroughly explaining which foods can upset her stomach and why using different ways of explaining will enable her to fully understand why she has to change how she eats. The third and last type of learning style is the kinaesthetic learner. This type of person learns the easiest by doing the procedures and taking a hands on approach.
