The Selkirk Express
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Selkirk Express growth boosted in relation to increase of capacity and tours from 60% to 85% since the year 1996. Over the last two years, however, growth has slowed to about 2%. In addition, TSE is also offering standard and premium service today. Sales and profits have shown a steady 8-12% increase per year at TSE. The corporate objective for TSE annual growth by 4-5%. TSE won’t consider an expansion in the number of trains that it is permitted to run on their track. They would consider proposals to lengthen the season in which TSE operates – currently they run their trips from April through September.
Situation Analysis:
Strengths: Selkirk express has the exclusive rights to travel through Rockies
Weakness: Selkirk express cannot increase the number of trains due to rules by VIA Rail
Opportunities: Have a wealthy data of their customers which have just taken the tour once and can be potential customers to take the tour again
Threats: Customers have many different options like Cruises, VIA Rail vacation special tours and other Vacation Adventures
PEST Analysis:
Political: TSE operates on both Canadian National & Canadian Pacific railroads, and they have announced that there would be no expansion possible for TSE as they have maximum capacity of Rail Cars (15) and they cannot even increase the number of Trains.
Economic: The inflation rate is set below 1.5% and the expert economist say it would be the same for couple of more years, so this would not affect TSE.
Technology: TSE has a wide data of their customers by their name and date of purchase. TSE can improve their data collection system by investing more money in their CRM System.
