Servant Leadership Ethics And Values
Hello Everyone, Ethics and values are the greatest influences in how I model my professional and personal life. Ethics are the moral principles that govern a person’s behavior and/or the conduct of an activity. (Ethics and Values, 2014) My values are important and have created lasting beliefs that I have grown up to embrace which me decide a certain action based on what is good or bad or desirable or undesirable about the activity or belief. These concepts are instrumental in how I make decisions and what outcomes I hope to achieve. I am of the personal belief that my ethics and values guide me in making all the decisions and when I ignore my own ethics and values I make bad decisions. As a transformational leader, the focus is more on the intellectual than the servant leaders. The servant leader is more focused on the developing their follower’s personal growth with emphasizes on their personal growth. These different focuses illustrate the servant leader’s focus on individual development and the transformational leader’s focus on organizational development. (Lowder, 2009) Servant leaders also place more emphasis on emotional levels, focusing on behaviors associated with valuing individuals. Transformational leaders focus more on taking risks to obtain organizational success that includes eliminating ineffective processes and systems. The transformational leader takes more risks than the servant leader, but the servant leader is more willing to forsake self-advancement and rewards toward the betterment of others. Authentic leadership also centers on building trust and even building on individual and team performance. With that being said there are components of transformational and servant leadership that come into play even with the tenants of authentic leadership. For example, in a situation where I am challenged as a leader because of an organizational decision, there needs to be an intellectual summation of the situation even as the ethical tenant is expressed. Along with this authentic and transformational leadership quality, the servant leadership principal comes into play as we make decisions that affect employees and how they react to decisions in the grand scheme. It is rather complicated that all three leadership approaches can be integrated in an organization or individual’s approach to the growth of their organization and the decisions made, but there is a dominate approach that is usually identified through actions by
