My role as a volunteer is to fill the gap for those confined in the walls of the facility. It is my duty to be a friend, visit, and play games with the residents. Other than that I felt that she was good at explaining my role as a volunteer. Such as my limitations, and what to do if a resident falls. One of the most important things she did teach me was when bringing a resident over the threshold of an elevator in a wheelchair, to let them that you are backing them up into the elevator, since it can be made into a lawsuit if I do not. Overall, my advisor was kind and helpful when I was at the facility, but when I would call her, she often wouldn’t answer, nor would she return my call. It provides a well-balanced infrastructure that enhances the well-being of all the community members involved. The pure existence of this facility tells me that the community has a great need for the quality care and needs of our geriatric population. It displays the necessity to take care of our elders and respect their lives by giving them a support system. This project made me feel more like a community member since I met so many new people and made countless connections with current community members. I felt I made a positive impact on society by giving my time and effort to the needs of others.
