Sestin Portfolio Analysis
Good Afternoon Dr. Juchartz,
Assessing the individual work in my portfolio was a hard task. I am not sure that is better than the other. I enjoyed the process and act of creating more than I thought I would so, after much deliberation, I have ranked my portfolio as follows.
1. The tension driven short story was one of my favorites to write. It was loosely based on my grandfather who was a small time bootlegger during prohibition and did have to hide out in the Upper Peninsula. I feel the strengths of this piece are the development of characters, specify Ralph and Ida Mae, and the use of tension. I used both external and internal conflict as a way to show the depth of the main character. I think the weakness of the piece is the ending,

The sestina was a mixed experience. I started by writing about my return home from Afghanistan but quickly changed direction I decided to write about bedtime in our house, I have two small daughters and the bedtime ritual is filled with both joy and frustration. I think the strengths are that I followed the format for the sestina effectively. I also think that the experience I describe in the poem is universal and has a wide audience. I think the major weakness is I may not capture the depth that seems to be the target of the Sestina because I chose my words to be repeated not for any depth of meaning, but because of their utilitarian purpose. Still, this is one of my favorites because of it allowed me to slow down and analyzes the beauty and love and a daily …show more content…
I think the strength of the found object narrative is the authenticity of the piece. Members of the military will be able to related subject matter and theme of this piece of writing. I utilized my experience with equipment and soldiers to create this piece. The weakness if that the piece may only be approachable a few people who have served in the military. I like this piece but because of the limited audience, I have ranked it lower.
8. The Found poem was difficult for me to construct but in the end turned out decent. I think the strength to the poem is the structure and the way the lines and stanzas play off each other which was a struggle to piece together. The weakness is that there is no unifying theme. 9. I felt I had to categorize the imitation writing at a low rank because I feel that it is not really my work. I think the strength of the piece is the theme and that I feel I came close to the structure of the original text. I think the weakness is that the piece seems forced and I was uncomfortable with the syntax in the original text which I feel shows in my work. 10. The strengths of forum two are that my writing process and motivation were analyzed and discussed. The weakness of the text is that it was completed at the beginning of the course and with limited experience in

The story I chose is “The Things They Carried” by the author Tim O’Brien. In the course of this essay I will highlight the physical and intangible “burdens” required by a soldier to overcome war which are of vital importance to inhibit the outcomes of a state of devastation. The story gives us insights about what each soldier carried to the combat zone and this was largely determined by necessities, but each man differed in their necessity. It gives a picture of the things a soldier needs to meet his basic needs during war. The basic necessities required in every situation or event lead to an enormous burden but the emotional consequences as an outcome of war lead to a greater burden and so did these emotional…
