Seventh Grade By Gary Soto
Ever hid something from people to help yourself with something? If so, read this article on masking a person’s self and find out if doing this, is a good thing or a bad thing. People wear masks for many different reasons. All around the world people hide things. Wearing these masks can be a good thing or a bad thing. If someone wears a mask, it can be good for them. It can help them mask what they don’t want people to know about. It can also be a bad thing though because it can get you in trouble or make people look at you differently. But overall, one side of the argument is true. It is more beneficial for someone to mask something from others.
One reason of why is because it helps one get something that they want in almost all the cases. In the Short Story, “Funny Boy” by Allan Burns, it states, “It sure was quiet. We missed you.” This was said by one of the girls that was friends with Harvey. He wanted to get closer to people but no one took him seriously because he was so funny all the time. This shows that Harvey got what he wanted because he hid that he had feelings about wanting to get closer to some people. In the end, he got to get closer with a

It says, “They left class together. Teresa asked him if he would help her with French.” This shows that Victor got what he wanted. He wanted to talk and hang out with Teresa more. He tried to show off his “French skills” in class even though he barely knew anything about French. In the end, he got to hang out with Teresa and she asked him if he could help her with her French homework. This was beneficial for him because he ended up getting what he wanted. His goal the whole time was to get to hang out with her and by masking that he was truly bad at French, he got what he wanted. These two quotes show that if you mask something of yours, you will end up getting what you want in the end at some

Dunbar uses “we” as a general term for all of humanity, although he is not excluding himself from this generalization. We as a society have at one point felt the strain of what others decide who we should be based off gender and race. The mask is what we put on to hide our emotions while we grin and say “I’m fine” while we aren’t. “It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,-” refers to hiding our true emotions. Eyes are often portrayed as a window to the soul and what we truly feel. It our eyes are hidden, it is potentially easy to lie about what we feel. He says that wearing the mask is a “debt we pay to human guile”, human guile meaning cunning or treachery, he is implying that we have to wear the mask because we have lied for so long about our true feelings, it is now expected of us to continue this grand façade. Even as we are hurting, we mutter countless pleasantries, “And mouth with myriad subtleties” as we fool ourselves and everyone else. When someone asks “How are you?”, you are expected to say “fine” or “good”; any answer besides that we feel guilty for unloading our issues on someone or we are searching for pity.…

People wear masks to masquerades to hide their physical features. However, the mask that I created for Servant Leadership actually highlights my insecurities instead of covering them up. Everyday I go through the motions with my classmates at a tiny school where each being thinks he/she knows everything about one another, but the truth is one never truly knows. Everyone has their own demons, and I certainly have mine.…

I feel that because of Harvey’s traumatic past (from witnessing his mom cheating on dad, his mom abandoning him, the loss of his father, and not so supporting brother who has gambling issues) and his mental health would contribute to his behaviour. His childhood experience could justify for his black-and-white view of relationship. He would either trust someone completely or not at all, and those who he trusts completely somehow end up “leaving him.” Harvey, who may seem arrogant and heartless on the outside, is an emotional and caring person underneath. Later on in the show, Harvey emotional wounds reopens when three of his closest friends leave him, which would explain why he has trouble sleeping at night and has panic attacks during the day. He tries to keep the fact that he goes to therapy a secret because he perceives it as a sign of weakness.…

The aforementioned theme hit close to home as I was watching the film because sometimes I feel that I am comprised of and reflect multiple personas. I initially pondered if I should seek therapy, but after realizing that this is a central theme in many novels and films, I have become to feel less alienated and accepted that this is mere human nature. I cannot exactly pinpoint how many different "masks" I wear, as some are slight variations of the same mask, but I will discuss a few in…

Ever since most people can recall, they have at one point in their lives either completely lied or only partially told the truth, especially to their parents whenever they had done something wrong. As children mature, however, this form of dishonesty tends to evolve to gradually suit the increasingly volatile human society, much of which involves avoiding ridicule by concealing their inner selves. While some endeavors of this manner are more noticeable to the general populace than others, and while they oftentimes transpire in the form of other emotions, such as arrogance and indignation, humans still have an inclination to mask themselves from others, in other words, use facade. Another form of facade is when people wish to hide their imperfections,…

Masks have the power to hide the identity of someone. They also have the power to change the identity of someone, allowing them to hide their real characters. When someone puts on a mask, it changes their voice, appearance, and other physical features. However, it may also change the way they act, the way they feel, and how they interact with people. At times, people may use masks to commit acts of violence.…

Masks make people do things that cause trouble. They make people lie, cheat, and embellish their emotions, therefore wearing a mask is deleterious to everyone. The first reason why wearing a mask is detrimental, is because it may cause a person to be judged or treated poorly. For example, this can be proven in the story, “Still Me Inside”, which is about, a girl named Mai Goda, who…

    How Masks Are Beneficial

Masks are always harmful to the wearer. There are many examples to point out from the books we have read this unit. One of the many pieces of evidence to prove this is in the stories we have read. One piece of evidence to prove this is in the story “7th Grade” by Gary Soto. In the story, it says “Mr.Bueller asked if anyone knew French. Victor raised his hand, wanting to impress Teresa...The teacher beamed and said, Tres Bien. Parlez Vous francais. Victor didn’t know what to say.” This is a great piece of evidence. I say this because when Victor wore a mask it backfired on him, he got embarrassed and he felt stupid for doing that. This is a form of masking because Victor raised his hand even though he did not know what the answer was. Therefore, he was not being himself, and when he was not himself it hurt him, and it revealed his true identity. Another piece of evidence to prove that masks are harmful to the wearer is in the book “Fatal Flower” by Laurence Yep. In this book “Fatal Flower” there was a girl named Gem. Gem wanted to become beautiful because she thought she was ugly, and went to a wise lady, the wise lady made her…

It was the 16 century when the idea of disguise started to be used in many plays.. It is used as an escape from the characters personalities and sometimes for comic effect. The disguise becomes very comical as in the time it was written only men could act on stage. This could lead to much confusion and comedy in the roles of those in disguise. Disguise can give the freedom to a character to act how they like and a chance for them to show their views.. a Number of lays were written and with the disguise parts it became an increased sense of self consciousness and identity. This led to people creating an image for themselves. If one can create a self, they can create many different versions of themselves each showing a different aspect of that person.…

For the persona, as Jung pointed out, is specifically designed to hide our shadow, to keep us from fully knowing ourselves as well as for fooling others. For many, the facade or persona of a competent, confident adult disguises a worried, anxious little girl or boy trying to get by in a scary grown up world. Any circumstance that potentiates such embarrassing exposure, revealing the real person behind the mask, is deeply threatening and, therefore, extremely worrisome. Anticipatory anxiety kicks in: What if I can't hide my feelings? My insecurity?…
