Sex Addiction
Topic Paper #2: Can Someone Be Addicted to Sex via the Web?

An addict craves his or her “vice of choice” for a number of reasons. For some, the trials and tribulations of day-to-day life cause people to use out of frustration, and others seem to become addicted to things that they subliminally tie to other forms of satisfaction. It has been proven that our genetic make up as well as things we experience early in childhood both contribute to a wide variety of the mannerisms we showcase, and the activities we are prone to taking part in. For example, if an individual is exposed to pornography at an early age, it would be easy to establish the foundation for a potential addiction. By using online resources for sexual fulfillment, people can be susceptible to filling voids in their personal lives such as not being able to sustain romantic relationships in the real world. After reading the Journal of Sex Research, and an above average background knowledge of substance abuse, I believe it is completely possible for an individual to become addicted to sex via the computer. The information I have attained about substance abuse comes from my best friend who was addicted to substances for several years. I met him several weeks after he left the rehabilitation facility, and he will be four years clean on Thanksgiving thanks to his strong faith and equally strong will power. After our countless discussions about shenanigans he had faced, I agree with the suggestion that people become addicted to things that give them a sort of instant gratification. Sex addiction, whether with another person or in the form of masturbation, is a prime example considering it makes those who take part feel good for the duration of the act. People can become addicted to sex via the web on account of the same euphoric pleasures. There are many kinds of online sexual activities. Examples include web camming, video and picture pornography, and erotic chat rooms where individuals can discuss

I can see how this could lead to unsafe practices or putting people in situations outside of their comfort level. As our text explains the behavioral account of the development of paraphilias, after a person pairs masturbation with inappropriate sexual fantasies repeatedly, they then extend the frequency and intensity. Naturally, if the person is feeling good about what they are doing they will repeat it. The intensity increase can account for the need to add to what they are doing. What may have been exciting and shocking before, is dull and boring at the present so they need to come up with something new. I was astounded by the statistics in our lecture notes regarding people who using the internet for sexual entertainment and was surprised to see that there was no percentage for those who were just curious or began with curiosity. I was also surprised that over 50% of the men were in committed relationships. I wonder if the relationship was lacking something for them or if they would…

There are a lot of things that people can be addicted to, but I am going to stick to one, which is alcohol. When addicted to something it’s when you are being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something that is expressively or physically habit forming, especially alcohol or narcotic drugs. There is different ways that people can go get help with something that they are dependent on, well in other words addicted to. You can get help in person, over the one, and even online.…

In social media, people can easily find videos and images that promotes “sexual addictive behavior.” These free sexual images and videos can lead to teens taking the next step on clicking the internet sites that gives “sex chat, sexual hook-ups, prostitutes, or finding old acting-out partners” (Hatch). Paulla Hall, a sex addiction therapist, claims about forty percent of teenagers had seen pornography before age of twelfth. For men, excitement was the reason for their sexual behavior. In women, “affirmation and feeling wanted” was their reason. Because teenagers lack of education and easy access to porn, it can easily lead them to become addicted. Keir Starmer, the Director of Public Prosecutions, admits internet pornography have increased violence in teenage relationships over the year…

This evening was unlike any of the numerous others that I’ve spent with Drew. If I were to list what to expect after a call from Drew, the list would be identical no matter the scenario. I received todays curse-laden phone call somewhere around 6 o’clock in the morning; Drew’s normal gym time. After hearing how he almost didn’t make it to the gym this morning after last evenings’ events that are far too inappropriate to discuss in further detail, I was invited to an upscale event that his company would be hosting later on tonight. Reluctantly, I agree to meet him at his large, overpriced, over-stylized, over-the-top residence so we could carpool to the event in his newly leased BMW (he never keeps a car for more than a year). I usually opt to take ration the amount of time I spend with Drew in doses, however, I agree for two main reason; the way Drew interacts with human beings is astonishingly efficient and I am certain (in no professional opinion) that my friend is a raging narcissist. It is better I explain the events of this one outing (which is one outing out of hundreds I’ve been a part of) than to list the arbitrary behaviors my friend exhibits. In doing so I hope to also explore whether or not there is a greater underlying factor that can be identified to explain Drew’s behavior or is it purely choice driven.…

The correlation between sexual compulsive behavior and the use of methamphetamine amongst gay men will be addressed in a psychoeducational group therapy setting. Because of unique cultural issues in the gay community, this behavior known as sexual sensation seeking remains physically, emotionally, and psychologically damaging to the individual and the community. By modeling our group after other empirically tested therapy groups, individuals will be guided in a closed, peer group setting led by empathetic co-facilitators who utilize existential and cognitive behavioral techniques. The personal involvement in group will afford an outlet to provide feedback, to modify irrational thinking that may lead to self-defeating behaviors. The goal from…

In a world where everybody is waiting for some blind, random disaster or some sudden disease, the addict has the comfort of knowing what will most likely wait for them down the road. They’ve taken some control over their ultimate fate, and their addiction keeps the cause of their death from being a total surprise. Love addiction is a human behavior in which people become addicted to the feeling of being in love. Just like any other type of addicts, love addicts can take on many different behaviors. Love addiction is more common than most people think. Most love addicts do not realize they are addicted to love. Love addicts are addicted to having someone take over their entire being. They want to have all of who they are absorbed in the life, and body of someone else. Without this they feel as if their world is dark. In William Shakespeare sonnet 73 says “In me thou see'st the glowing of such fire, that on the ashes of his youth doth lie, as the death-bed whereon it must expire, as on consum'd with that which it was nourish'd by. This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong, to love that well which thou must leave ere long.” These few lines mean that he is determined to make his mistress fall in love with him as he has for her. In the article “Addicted to Love? It’s Your Brain” by Ki Mae Heussner, Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist states that “You just crave this person. You’re willing to do crazy things, stupid things.” A lovelorn person obsesses, carves and distorts…
