The Muslim woman wears the hijab because she sees it as a part of her religion and allows her to show she’s a believer.
The hijab is worn to be modest. The author of “ ?” is clearly stated in her writing that the wearing of the hijab tells one “ I am a Muslim and therefore I am entitled to be treated with respect.” She went on to say that the hijab serves as a sign to respect someone in the same way a suit worn by a man on Wall Street. It is apparent that since the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 in the Untied States people does not look upon women in a hijab with respect and indeed think less of them. Sadly this isn’t the only example why people don’t respect each other as a large amount of disrespect comes from the men in the Islamic
culture.
Author Ridley states that she is a feminist and has been for many years now. A feminist is someone who supports equal rights for women. It is the belief that women
Should have the same political, social, and economic rights as men. There is nothing wrong with this claim. We all are human and we should all receive and have the same rights. During the Miss Earth competition in 2003, Miss Afghanistan, Vida Samadzai participated in the bikini competition. This was a huge leap for women's liberation in their culture. Vida Samadzai received a special award for representing the recognition of women's rights.
Ms. Ridley went on to say, “In Islam, superiority is achieved through piety not beauty, wealth, power, position or sex.” If I were to put this into my own words I would have to say it means women should not have to gain respect by the objectification of their bodies. Human beings are naturally judgmental and disrespectful if something is different from the paradigms they were taught they growing up. We are only able to share and explain reasonable point of views on life. Sexism should not be common in our culture but since it is we have to be tolerable of those who are single track minded and not accepting of others. I know that Ms. Ridley’s stand on feminism in Muslim culture is a strong one and a great one. I hope that her words will be able to open minds of others that remain not accepting. Sexism is very relevant to today. In our society Women are paid less than and they are objectified more than men. They are looking down upon as the weaker sex for the sole reason that they are simply women.
