Sex is very common amongst my generation. It’s like the normal thing to do for teenagers. The only thing that surprises us is the same sex experimentation that has began to rise. When I say this I know that most people probably are only thinking women but, in recent studies done by psychologists they have found that more men have been engaging in sexual behavior with another man. This interests me because it makes me wonder about how people think about sex in general. If you classify yourself as straight then what makes you want to try having sex with men or women of the same sex? With this in mind I decided to design an experiment on Southern Polytech students. My hypothesis states that 30% of the students at Southern Polytech University have engaged in same sex behavior. This has a range from kissing, touching, sex, etc. Another point I would like to point out is that recently I found out one of my male best friends had sex with my other male best friend. This shocked me but I was very surprised at them because they told me they would never do anything of that nature. After this they said they were straight so this had me thinking again. Can you really tell yourself that you’re still straight after having sexual intercourse with another male or female? Hopefully my results from my survey will support my hypothesis on this arising phenomenon.
No one can argue that when a female engages in Girls Gone Wild activity they are not automatically labeled a lesbian or bisexual. In society it is very normal for women to experiment with another woman in various ways. When a man experiments it’s not exactly easy to admit let alone still defend your straight. As I stated before I didn’t understand how many men who declared their self as straight could have sexual intercourse with another man. Well according to Joe Kort from Psychology today that over 3 million men have a sexual in counter with another man once in their life time. Of this 3 million all of them were married. Joe also thinks that Straight men who have sex with men do so for a variety of reasons. Some have been sexually abused and are compulsively reenacting childhood sexual trauma by male perpetrators; some find sexual release with another man more accessible; some have sex with men because it's easier and requires fewer social skills than those required to have sex with women; some are "gay for pay" and get financial rewards; some like the attention they receive from other men; some like anal sex, which they're otherwise too ashamed to talk about or engage in with their female partners. Joe then goes on to say that For straight men who have sex with men, same-sex encounters aren't about romance or sexual attraction and desire, but about sexual and physiological arousal-"getting off" with another who's male and accessible. They don't sexually desire or get aroused by looking at other men, only by the sexual act. But if they don't actively desire other men, how do they get to the point of having sex with them? These men typically want to bond with and get affection from other men. Their behavior may reflect a desire to experiment, to engage in something that's taboo, or to express inner psychological conflicts involving their sexual feelings and desires that have nothing to do with having a gay or bisexual identity.
Also a survey was done by a group of psychologists stating that nearly one in 10 men who say they're straight have sex only with other men in a New York city survey. And 70% of those straight-identified men having sex with men are married. In fact, 10% of all married men in this survey report same-sex behavior during the past year. Also, a man who says he is straight but is having sex with other men is more likely to be married than a straight man who has sex with women, according to the survey. Only 54% of the men who say they're straight and have sex with women are married, compared with the 70% marriage rate among the men who say they're straight but have sex with men.
Clinical Psychologists Frances Praver took a stand on the issue of why some woman experiment with same sex relationships. She thinks that some women have always known that they had sexual desires for other women and their marriage may be a way of trying to conform to societal constraints about same sex relationships. In that case, the woman, may have, unwittingly, used the relationship as an experiment to see if a relationship with a man could ‘cure' her of her lesbian leanings.
As for my experiment, I tested 50 Southern PolyTechnic students with my survey. I tried to look at a demographic of how old each student was compared to their race, religion, and classification of class. Honestly I expected not too many people to honestly admit to it since it’s kind of a subject most people will not admit to if they are classifying themselves as straight. I thought that many of my students would not answer because of religious belief but I was really surprised with the answers I got back. Some of the key questions I asked were: If they had sex with the same sex before, Have they ever found the same sex attractive, and what there orientation was. Most of my surveys were of course answered no or never but I did get some things that were really weird. My results came out better than expected. 33% of the females admitted being sexually active with another female. 2 of those were classifying themselves as straight while only 2 classify themselves as bi-sexual. 29% of the men tested admitted to having sex with another man or finding another man attractive. 18% fantasized about men before. 18% said they would do it again. With all my surveys all of them said they still feel like they are straight even admitting to kissing touching, sex and oral sex with their close best friend. In all my surveys done for me they all (male and female) admitted to experimenting with their best friend. 76% of men said they have never had same sex relations while 16% of females never experimenting either. Majority of my survey questions were in fact dealing with same sex experimentation. I threw in questions like were they a virgin or if their friends had had same sex relation before. And about 1/3 of them had admitted of them knowing their friends having sex with the same sex. Things that were not very relevant were if they felt it’s more acceptable for women to have same sex relationships and what there classification was. I didn’t really need that information because female experimentation is more accepted.
This experiment turned out better than I expected many people feel it’s ok to experiment with the same sex. Me on the other hand it’s not my thing. It just amazed me how many people that have done something with the same sex already. I feel its ok you can still call yourself straight but if you keep experimenting more than once then you might be having sexual orientation issues or you’re just confused. I agree with Joe from above. For many men maybe it is about just getting off. Even the attention they like getting from men to make them try it or fantasize about it. My hypothesis was supported over 30% of southern poly students have had a same sex encounter. I feel like if it were more demographic here then maybe my results would have been a little better. I also feel that some of my participants didn’t answer to their best ability even though I figured that. Some surveys looked like they just circled things. In all I still got a good percentage of surveys. In all this experiment went very well with good percentages.
