Intro: Sexual assault in prisons has been a problem ever since prisons have been established. Whether it’s the guards assaulting the inmates or the inmates assaulting the other inmates it is still a problem. Every person who ever enters a prison facility will either witness someone being sexually assaulted or will engage in the act of sexually assaulting someone.
Thesis: Sexual assaults in prison are a problem because they can lower the self esteem of the victim and it can also contribute to the spread of incurable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, but there are some solutions to these problems.

Sexual Assault in Prisons

Sexual assault in prisons has been a problem ever since prisons have been established.
Whether it’s the guards assaulting the inmates or the inmates assaulting the other inmates, it is still a problem. Every person who ever enters a prison facility will either witness someone being sexually assaulted or will engage in the act of sexually assaulting someone. Sexual assaults in prison are a problem because they can lower the self esteem of the victim and it can also contribute to the spread of incurable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, but there are some solutions to these problems.
Sexual Assault in Prisons is a problem because it can cause long term low self-esteem issue for the man or woman that is being assaulted (Prendergast). Inmates feel as though no one will want to hear their story or will even help them out and that can cause them to just shut out the world, which can lead to severe long term low self esteem issues. Ever since Scott Howard was raped in prison he now suffers from low self esteem about his sexuality and about his appearance (Prendergast). “He was neatly dressed in blazer, slacks and tie… He was determined to not think about it too much, to just get it over with – like so much else that he’d been through over the past few years” (Prendergast). By Scott being assaulted in prison he now covers up what happened to him and tries not to think so much about it because in the past no one has ever listened (Prendergast). It is important to try and get others to open up about their experiences in prison no matter what so that this can help decrease the rates of people with low self esteem issues and lots of other
things. Another problem is because it can cause a spread in life-threatening diseases such as HIV/AIDS. By inmates engaging in sexual activities with other inmates and not being protected they are highly at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS (“Prisons, Prisoners, and HIV/AIDS”). There have been many cases around the world where there has been a possible transmission of HIV/AIDS through sexual activity. In the UK a HIV positive male was forced to engage in sexual activities with another male inmate (“Prisons, Prisoners, and HIV/AIDS”). By this occurring, the HIV male could have just as easily transmitted his strand of HIV to the other male inmate. It is important to stop the spread of disease in prisons so that there can at least be a start in getting completely rid of these diseases in full.
A solution to this problem is to have more video cameras all around the prisons and add them to the restricted areas of the prisons also. By making the inmates feel more secure and protected they will know that it is okay to stand up and tell others about their abuse experiences. Most inmates don’t stand up or even tell about their abuse because they fear that telling will lead to them being tortured even more within those prison walls (Kantor). “The victim who reports rape in prison faces a probability of further suffering and worse injury” (Kantor). By the victims not reporting the incidents that have occurred to them then that makes it harder for the authorities to ensure that they are protected. Even though these men and women are incarcerated they are still equals and it is equally important that they feel the same amount of security and protection that everyone else in America feels. Another solution to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases is to provide the inmates with protection such as condoms (Kantor). Most inmates do not know when they will be attacked or even if they will be forced to attack another inmate, so by providing them with the use of condoms that ensures that they are being protected from all diseases that may be present in the prison. Of the few victims that have spoken up they all agree that they should be given the right to condoms inside the prisons (Kantor). “Other specific preventive practices include dispensing of condoms…” (Kantor). By the prisons refusing to dispense condoms to the inmates it proves the point that they are not being treated equally and that the prisons are just knowingly allowing the inmates to penetrate others unprotected, and doing nothing about it. Even though it will not completely stop the spread of this life threatening disease it is a start and it can also help to prevent it.
These problems have been problems for years and may still be problems years from now, but by contemplating these solutions then it can at least be a start. By stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS and long term low self esteem this can be a jump start on helping America and around the other parts of the world to become more successful economically and socially. This will help for people not to be afraid of what others think of them and it can also help for them to be more open to sharing things and experiences with others. Finally this can also help to decrease the suicide rates and HIV/AIDS rates.
