Directions: An author tries to convince a reader that his or her opinion is correct by giving evidence. Writers often use one of these four kinds of evidence to convince a reader: FACTS, EXAMPLES, QUOTES FROM EXPERTS, and REFERENCES/DESCRIPTIONS OF REAL EVENTS. Before writing your essay, brainstorm and research to fill out the chart below. Your audience will be much more likely to believe you! FACTS
The adverse health effects from cigarette smoking account for more than 440,000 deaths, or nearly one of every five deaths, each year in the United States.
If nobody smoked, one of every three cancer deaths would not happen.
Nonsmokers who live with smokers are more likely to develop lung cancer than other nonsmoking adult.
Smoking causes increased health risk.
EXAMPLES
After ten years of not smoking the risk of getting lung cancer is reduced to half that of a smoker.
Cancer causes kidney, lung, pancreatic, stomach and many more cancers.
Children exposed to secondhand smoke in the home are more likely to cough and wheeze and to have middle ear problems.
Coronary heart disease and stroke increased chance to 2 to 4 times. Men developing lung cancer 23 times and women are 13 times.
