Shakespeare Vs Today Essay
Essay Our world today, is very different from William Shakespeare's world. He lived in the 1600's and part of the 1700's. Shakespeare lived in a time where babies, just after three days, they were baptized. The way that they acted was very different from how we act today. Shakespeare lived in London, England while he was writing plays and acting in them. Back in that time, only guys were allowed to act in plays. The women were often seen as insignificant. They were often pushed out of the way, and ignored of their feelings. We have rebuilt Shakespeare's Globe Theater, but we haven't put any arificial lights or any fancy things that make the plays seem more realistic. In the time of the 1600's, there were many indifferences of gender. Today,
we do have some of that. But, back then, it was worse. Women were forced into arranged marriages. They could not participate in any plays. Women did not have any rights, if she was to refuse the marriage. It would be taken upon an insult to her father and she would be punished. Women did not have any jobs outside of their homes. If you were single, you were often referred to as a witch. These women were raised and taught to think that they were lower and less important as the men. They were often scared of the males in the house. Women in these days were acccused of having low standards, and were thought to be untrustworthy. People back then were rude to the actors. They would yell at them. Even spit on them. Insult their acting, and just basically have no respect for the actors. " We don't yell insults at actors, spit or toss orange peels on the ground. We also smell better." The people were dirty and unclean. "People threw dirty water and other rubbish in the streets." Says the writers of localhistories.org. These people did not have sewage systems. Back then, these people did not have deodorant or even toothbrushes. Because of these unsanitary conditions, people would get sick more often. And, since they did not even have hygiene products, how were they supposed to heal the sick? Many people died of sicknesses and even the plague.
