The Caribbean served as model for the Spanish empire in various ways. Indigenous peoples provided enough surplus labor. Spaniards granted individual indigenous people as well as encomiendas to encomendero, people that held the grants. Encomenderos were able to use the people as a labor source. It became a colonial backwater and served as a testing ground. They adapted cities to American realities and provided opportunities to import new ideas and reform. The Caribbean is a mixture of different cultures and people. Jamaica is under the island of Cuba and on the west side of Haiti. The Dominican Republic shares it land with Haiti on the west and Puerto Rico is on the east, crossing the ´´canal de la mona´´. These islands may look similar in a geographical view but they have some peculiarities. Aspects like their languages and the political situation where they are living make them unique. Since the new world was discovered, these lands were attractive and a new source of economic gain for Europe. Dominicans and Jamaicans have in common some historic facts as the immigration of slaves from Africa. Although Dominican R. and Jamaica are both Caribbean islands that have similar geographical characteristics, they differ in language, politics, and culture.…
"The name Caymans meaning Cayman Islands is recorded since ca.1503. In the 16th and early 17th century the islands were used as stop-overs for merchant sailors and pirates providing fresh turtle meat" (World, 1). Columbus discovered Little Cayman and Cayman Brac and his fourth and last voyage to the New World on May 10, 1503. While sailing from Panama to Hispaniola, severe winds pushed his ships off course (Travel, 1). Since 1661 the Caymans were settled from Jamaica and the first settlements were razed by the Spanish. In 1670, England took over The Caymans from Spain, and the islands came under the administration of the Governor of Jamaica. While remaining a dependency of Jamaica, the Cayman Islands were given an assembly in 1832, seated in the capital Georgetown. Of the 18 members, 10 were elected, the other 8 were appointed by the governor of Jamaica (2). "These islands remained a dependency of Jamaica until 1959. When Jamaica became independent from British colonial rule in 1962, the Cayman Islands opted to become a direct dependency of the United Kingdom." In 1972 a new constitution was adopted. In 1950 the islands populated about 6,000 people. In 1960, it grew to 8,000 and by 1970 the population grew to about 11,000…
The Caribbean islands were also a very fought over land. Having all kinds of islands put a lot of country’s at war for them. Spain settled on all of the bigger ones. Leaving Cuba, the French, English, and many others to the tiny islands. At one point the Netherlands created a diversion with war. Attacking the Spanish having their heads turned the whole time, and the Netherlands using all they had to go to war and fight the Spanish. Mean time the English were taking over the land. Some of the more important ones were Barbados and Jamaica. Barbados though eventually moved to South Carolina, well most of them did. The Islands of the Caribbean though wasn’t very fertile land. They tried many different crops, but the only ones that worked were sugar and sugar cane, which they could turn into Rum. Very Unlike Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Where the crops and livestock flourished throughout the land. That being the only crop they really had makes it hard for me want to live there. On top of it being a big fight over the islands. Eventually in the Caribbean’s the slaves took over most of the population out numbering the settlers four to one. Which in my eyes seems like a big deal back then and I wouldn’t want to live through…
A few years later after Columbus’ landing, the Spanish established its first settlement on the island, now the Dominican Republic. And in 1697, the Spanish ceded western Hispaniola to France, creating what is now known as Haiti. During this period, Haiti became one of the richest French colonies, and to maximize profits, African slaves were brought to Haiti. They were used to extract from the land and people valuable resources—sugar and coffee—for trade (Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, 2010).…
The Europeans also established colonies in The Caribbean Islands. The Spanish claimed the colonies of Cuba, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico, while the English had settlements on Antigua, St. Kitts, Jamaica, and Barbados. They based their economy on crops and after failed attempts growing tobacco and cotton, learned that sugar…
