Due to the high value of the shark fin, those who own the corporations that distribute the shark fins reap lots of profit. Although they may realize that their actions can potentially harm the environment, the large amount of money involved may outweigh a lot of people’s moral compass. Since fishing grounds are far from law and land, their activities are not supervised. Some tuna boats transfer their catch to other fishing boats, including shark fins, so they turn up in distant ports around the world undetected. This is probably also an easier method to transport the fins to countries where it is illegal to import them. The tuna industry is very much legal; therefore, it is easier to hide the shark fins in tuna boats. Money is a strong incentive in this industry.
The world today faces an issue of unemployment. The shark fin industry provides many job opportunities, especially for those who come from developing countries who do not have adequate educational background to find other jobs. Moreover, the job is somewhat more dangerous with more unfavorable conditions as compared to other jobs, and people with better qualifications wouldn’t want to work as shark hunters.
