In the play an inspector calls by J.B Priestley. The character Sheila is used to represent the authorâs ideas of change from the class system, where everyone is grouped by wealth and walls are built between them. To the socialist way where everyone is equal and there are no extremes and responsibility shared for one another's welfare. He embraces this idea in his play by showing the change in her from one idea to the other. initially Sheila is introduced as a girl that values material objects such who lives a comfortable lifestyle "pleased in life" and has not yet matured to a point where material value is worth less to her than the people around her that actually are there to befriend her and not to use her like her father is. We see this through her reaction to Gerald when he presents her with the engagement ring "is it the one I wanted." and through the way that she obsesses over the ring taking Priestley uses the structure of the play in producing Sheila's change to convince the audience that taking on social responsibility will change their lives for the best. The audience notices the distinct structure on who the Inspector chooses to interrogate at a time. We notice that Sheila is the second person to be interrogated, shortly after her father and just before Gerald. The fact that Sheila in interviewed between two people who don't accept responsibility highlights who is able to accept responsibility and who dosen't. Furthermore, throughout the play Sheila is only woman in the play to accept responsibility which could perhaps suggest Priestley wanted to present young woman as strong minded. This is significant as many people thought women had a naturally lower status than men at the time and weren't considered to be open minded. Also, Priestley could have directed Sheila's change specifically towards the women in the audience to show them if Shiela is able to become open & strong minded by accepting responsibility, then they will too if they do the same as

First off Sheila can be self centered. One reason she is self centered is she talks about herself often. When Sheila and the boy are moving down the river she talks and talks about herself, and the boy never has much of a chance to talk to her about himself. She can also be considered self centered, because she did not want to get in the canoe with the boy. This quote helps explain this, “ ‘Look,’ she said. ‘I can get Dad’s car.’ ‘It’s faster this way,’ I lied. ‘Parking’s tense up there. Hey, it’s safe. I won’t tip it or anything.’ She let herself down reluctantly into the bow” (Wetherall 2). This demonstrates that she is looking for a way to travel how she wants, because she “reluctantly” (Wetherell 2) lets herself down into the boat. Another time she is self centered is the way she acts. While she is on a float she has several body positions, and each one means a certain thing. These positions are, “If she lay flat on the diving board with her had training idly in the water… that her various suitors found the courage to come near” (Wetherell 1). This shows that she is self centered by acting, only some of you can come near me, or do not disturb me. Sheila can also be considered rude. At one point in the story she claims that “fishing’s dumb,’ she said making a face. ‘I mean, it’s boring and all. Definitely dumb’ “ (Wetherell 3). She acts rude when not considering others feelings who might enjoy the activity. Another time she acts rude is when she goes into the canoe. In the canoe there are two paddles, and the boy had one. The other paddle was lying in the boat and Sheila did not pick it up and help paddle. Instead she sat in the canoe as if paddling was not good enough of a task for her to do. The last rude action Sheila performs is at the end of the story when she leaves the show and goes home with someone else. This is the quote, “all I really…

The English however, who were biased to the thought of a female ruler in the being, had grown to love and adore their new monarch. In Act one, she wanted to put a curse on Elizabeth Proctor, because she wanted to be with her husband John Proctor. She and many other girls around the same age were in the woods dancing and chanting, one of them being naked, which is frowned upon in the Puritan society. Abigail Williams then drank blood as her uncle walked up on them while they all ran away. Through the next day’s things went wrong and started lying to her uncle and everyone else about witches. She says to the girls “Let either of you breath a word, or the edge of a word about the other things, and i will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” That shows you that she is a mean girl who thinks of nothing but herself.…

The Joan Scott reading. Deconstructing Equality-Versus Difference: or, the uses of Poststructuralist theory for Feminism, starts out talking about the thought behind theory and the need for a theory behind the woman’s feminism movement. “We need theory that can analyze the workings of patriarchy in all its manifestations- ideological, institutional, organizational, subjective- accounting not only for continuous but also for change over time.” (pg 33). She basically is stating that we need theory to let us think in many ways by understanding the different goals within the movement. Then she moves into four useful terms that are associated with the feminist movement. The four terms are language, discourse, difference and deconstruction. Language goes more in depth than just the wording used in the native tongue and vocabulary. It’s more of a measure of understanding how social relations are conceived by understanding how they work. When studying history we must both understand the language being spoken along with the contextual meaning during the time period. Discourse can be labeled as historically, socially, and institutionally specific structure of statements, terms, categories and beliefs. “Discourse is thus contained or expressed in organizations, in institutions as well as in words; all of these constitute texts or documents to be read.” (pg 35). Discourse in other words can be known as the truths we hold to a certain field. Difference is a important construction of the concept behind analyzing. “Any unitary concept in fact contains repressed or negated material; it is established in explicit opposition to another term”.(pg 37). Difference can be seen as any possible opposing idea to another idea. Lastly is Deconstruction which is defined as the dismantling or destructive enterprise which can be often applied the analyzing of…
