To begin with, Sherman Alexie is a modern day warrior because he never gave up even after enduring torment and numerous difficult situations. When referring to his childhood nicknames Sherman Alexie stated “Sometimes it was Bloody Nose or Steal-His-Lunch . Once it was Cry-Like-a-White-Boy, even though none of us had seen a white boy cry.” This statement illustrates how despite the torment he received from his peers as early as the first grade, Sherman Alexie never gave up hope and was able to graduate from high school …show more content…
unlike most of his peers. Victor said, “Why should he organize a reservation high school reunion? My graduating class has a reunion every weekend at the Powwow Tavern”. This quote shows how because so many students at the reservation high school have not graduated, there is no need for a high school reunion because nobody was able to leave the reservation.
Along with that, Sherman Alexie always kept his calm. There were many incidents when he could have easily lost his cool but he chose to take the high road. In the second grade, Sherman Alexie was faced with a situation in which a mean teacher was unfair and treated him cruelly. he stated that “Tell Me you’re sorry,” she said. “Sorry For what?” I asked. “Everything,”she said and made me stand straight for fifteen minutes, eagle-armed with books in each hand. One was a math book; the other was English. But all I learned was that gravity can be painful.” This quote illustrates how Sherman Alexie was traded horribly by his second grade teacher but instead of lashing out he chose to keep calm and deal with his punishment, even though it was unfair and cruel.
Finally, Sherman Alexie was able to adapt to his surroundings and cope with the way thing were.
In the sixth grade, Sherman Alexie witnessed a confrontation and quickly learned how he was supposed to handle a fistfight. “Throw The first punch!” Stevie said for the third time, and Randy reared back and pitched a knuckle fastball that broke Stevie’s nose. That Was Randy, my soon-to-be first and best friend, who taught me the most valuable lesson about living in the white world: Always Throw the first punch.” Sherman Alexie quickly learned that in the event of a fisfight, it was always best to throw the first punch so you did not start the fight from a position of
weakness.
