Sherman Alexie Judgement
Judgement and its connections to racism

What do you think when you see a drunk homeless native? A person who can’t handle responsibility and drinks away every cent the native gets? What about a black woman who has 7 kids and is rude to you while collecting welfare checks? Do you see someone taking advantage of your money? Or not a functional member of society due to “ that’s just what blacks do”? What people don’t see is the way these people been hurt, that native man could have horrible things happen to him which forced him to shut himself out and same with the black woman’s attitude. What people don’t see is other people’s perspective, because they are too selfish to. People judge them as if they were covers to a book yet never opened the pages to see the pain and sorrow in their life’s. Sherman Alexie proved this in the book Flight, that being thus trained to pass judgement on someone you don’t know leads to a vicious

The perfect example of this is in the book when Zits made his dad relive memories of his past and how his father was abused, which made him run when Zits was born. This wasn’t to hurt Zits in any way but was to save him in his father’s mind. Because his father didn’t want himself to turn into his father and treat Zits like his father did. He spent his whole life literally hating his father for running away and blamed him for his mother's death and ultimately judged his father for it. Since his dad wasn't around Zits took his anger out on everything and everyone, judging them cause the people he met could hear him and take in his anger. But as soon as he saw why his dad ran he suddenly understood the best he could and let hate go. The hate Zits had left him from that part of his life because he saw his father's pain and perspective. This is why it is so important to not judge but instead

“Nikki-Rosa” written by Nikki Giovanni, discussed the heartaches and suffering of growing up in America as an African-American person. There are so many people here in this world and no one can choose their race or their family, but just as she mentioned we are left to deal with our own troubles in the homes as well as the outside pressure from other races. No specific race understands the struggles of an African-American or minorities, because they are blinded by their own up comings. Someone may have been born into a family that was upper or middle class, but just as Ms. Giovanni wrote, “Because they never understand,” (Louis and Mckay) it will always be one race against the other, no matter how hard we try. Growing up, I had to block…

In the text “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, the author shows how racial injustice and death can change a person, especially seeing it happen right in front of you, through the struggle with identity, activism against social injustice, and the importance of relationships both positive and negative. Even though Starr has family and friends around her, attempting to make her feel better is still not enough. Two of her childhood friends lost their lives due to gun violence in Garden Heights, and her experiencing these tragic deaths right in front of her is traumatizing, which can cause a change in a person. Starr has two different “worlds” she lives in, Garden Heights is known for (in African American eyes); Racist cops, injustice, protesting,…

Zits begins to understand the fear that his father had; the fear to become like his own father. Zits father also followed in his own father’s footsteps in a way where he became an alcoholic however, without his father there at least a few visits has caused Zits to also become an alcoholic. Furthermore, with all the memories he had relived he goes back to the day Zits was born and Zits is now able to answer his own question, on why he left, “And now my father, whipped and bloodied by his memory, stops pacing in the hospital hallway. Somewhere on this floor, my mother is giving birth to me. But my father cannot be a participant.…

However, Zits was unlike his father because he was given an opportunity to unveil the questions that he has been wondering for many years; he was able to learn from the mistakes and become a better person. A significant similarity between Zits and his father was the absence of father figures in their lives. Zits complained and hated the fact that he did not have a father; although he attempted to replace his father with somebody else, he eventually realized that no one was able to fill the hole that his father left in his soul. Likewise, Zits’ father struggled with paternal love in his life childhood too.…

They do not mean to be unkind, for the most part, it is about an innocent wonder of something they are not used to see too often. Nevertheless, they can’t help the fact that they recognize themselves in a better position than the black man. I go back to when I mention one of the comparison he makes of how the white man is seen by the black man, and how the black man is seen by the white man: a white man is a conqueror in the black man territory, while the black man is just the servant whose duty is to obey his master. To highlight his ideology, he later says “what the white man imagines the black man to be, the black man is enabled to know who the white man…

Racism is part of America’s culture to this day, and will most likely never go away. In many circumstances a stereotype comes into play, which then leads to a judgement based on a prejudice that that specific person fits into that specific racial category. The person however may not even fit into that category, making a wrongful stereotype. This topic is very specific and confusing, which can be inferred by my previous statement. The article, “The Power of Prejudice” states, “Those perfectly articulated and wickedly poignant verbal smack-downs of prejudiced offenders may happen in films and literature but occur far less frequently in real life.”…

In addition, as they worship and continue to desire white features, they fail to recognize the darkness that exists among the white community, in regards to having and enacting inhuman conceptions towards the Black community, such as Jim Crow Laws which limit the beauty perception among the new upcoming…

Why are some people judgmental towards others? Whether we judge on race, gender, or something as simple as age, judging not only causes anguish but can leave emotional scars people never recover from. Racism is one of the most common of judgmental forms still seen today in our society. Although today we do not find racism as prominent as back in the 1920s and 1930s. When reading the story “The Angel of the Candy Counter” written by Maya Angelou, we can see the damage of racism from a child’s view, and how she dealt with the experience in order to successfully allow us to understand the negative power of racism. As a result of Angelou incorporating strategies such as ethos, pathos, shocking words, and even fantasies to bring out intense emotions she is able to connect with her audience.…

This section of the text struck my interested for the simple reason of how individuals react when put into unfamiliar circumstances and environments. The question is why individuals are so easy to judge? Why not take the time to understand the way people or communities do things? It’s unfortunate to see so many people not able or not willing to enjoy the luxury of experiencing what the world, and it’s cultures has to offer. Especially, when in all reality we essentially all want the same times out of life. Each culture may have their own way of structuring their way to production of living. As…

    Overcoming Bias

When my family and I was being judged by the way we looked at that moment we felt as if we were a citizens of America because of the way that person treated us. After we got done eating we were talking to each other saying “why do we let these little things get to us. We know who we are and no one else’s opinion should matter.” I then realized that I can overcome bias because I didn’t let what other people said about me knock me down. It shouldn’t even matter what people think anyways you are you. I treat people the way they treat me unless they are being biased then I ignore it. I’m not a bias person, if I ever were being bias toward anyone I would apologize right away. People should be equal to each other. If I see someone that is different from me I just say that person is unique. When I think back to that moment in the restaurant I think to myself why should the color of our skin or ethnic background matter than what’s on the inside. Basically why judge a book by its cover.…

Racism and prejudice has affected almost everyone at least once in their life. Whether people are aware of it or not, most people are judged by strangers every time they walk into a room. They may not be judged only by their skin color but also by their appearance, sexual orientation, social class or even religion. Those affected by this problem know the harm and humiliation that results from it. Not only does it cause harm to the person being judged but it could also ruin their public perception to people they have not even met yet.…

    Mr. Tou's Analysis

As humans we are easily influenced by others views. He mentions stereotype threating or other wise known as the looking glass self. This social psychological concept that states that we grow out of what society's perspectives are. Like with Mr. Tou`re he gave up of the idea of the possibility of being the first black president because of a heated disagreement with another student who rejected is inspiration Mr. Jackson of being able to succeed as a president. This distorted his perception of becoming president and settled for political advisor. The looking glass self is a self that chisels away at our self esteem. Although some may not let others opinions influence who they are, if you are more aware of the stereotypes it has the potential to make you more nervous about what the stereotype. He also bought up something I had not every heard of (which is why we need to know of African American studies) and that is the Atlanta child murder. In this incidence many black children where disappearing and turning up dead. They suscepted a black psychotic man who was already charged with two adult killings, they referred to this as the black whistle. Tou`re mentioned that no one discussed the killings as linked together till a year later when they finally started to investigate. I agree that this was a lacking issue and that something should have been done a…
