Shingles Research Paper
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, causing a painful rash. Shingles can occur anywhere on your body. They most often appear on your torso. They look like a small strip of blisters. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus is already in your spinal cord and brain, but inactive. The virus may reactivate as shingles years later. Shingles can be very painful. Vaccines can help lower the risk of shingles, and early treatment can help shorten a shingles infection. Shingles can cause death, but is rare.

The signs and symptoms of Shingles include pain in the forehead and the side part of your body. Pain can be anywhere from mild to severe. Skin irritations are also sign. On your skin you may find blisters, rashes, scabs, ulcers, and redness. Someone with Shingles is probably very tired.

After you recover from chickenpox, the virus can enter your nervous system and remain there for years. Eventually, it may reactivate and travel along nerve pathways to your skin, producing shingles. The reason for the reappearance is unclear.

Early effects of shingles include headache, sensitivity to light, and flu-like symptoms without a fever. You may then feel itching, tingling, or pain where a band, strip, or small area of rash may appear several days or weeks later. Shingles is treatable by a medical professional. There's no cure for shingles, but treatment can heal faster and reduce your risk of complications. Medications that can speed healing include Acyclovir (Zovirax), Valacyclovir (Valtrex), and Famciclovir (Famvir). Prescribed medicines that reduce pain include Capsaicin cream, Anticonvulsants, Tricyclic antidepressants, and Numbing agents. Shingles generally lasts between two and six weeks. Most people get shingles only once, but it is possible to get it two or more

Shingles occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox starts up again in your body. After you get better from chickenpox, the virus "sleeps" (is dormant) in your nerve roots. In some people, it stays dormant forever. In others, the virus "wakes up" when disease, stress, or aging weakens the immune system. But after the virus becomes active again, it can only cause shingles, not chickenpox.…

These patches can be easily spotted since they are a bright red and have small blisters (more like pimples) that contain the virus in a fluid form. The patches can radiate in itchiness, pain, or a burning sensation that stays constant for long periods of time. Shingles is caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus which is the same virus that creates Chickenpox in young children. Shingles can only happen if a person has had Chickenpox in the past, in which the Varicella-Zoster virus stays dormant in the nerve roots and reawakens later in life, in many cases the virus stays dormant forever. A person is most at risk of getting Shingles if they are over the age of 50 and as of today approximately 1 in 3 people in America will get Shingles. Although 100 Shingles related deaths happen every year, it is usually in rare cases involving people with extremely poor immune systems. While on the topic about poor immune systems, I want to move on to the next point which is the transmission of…

Smallpox emerged around 200 years after the Black Death, during the mid-14th century, and quickly became one of the biggest killers in the expanding world. (Dobson,p.130) Smallpox changed the beauty standards in Europe through the use of makeup, fashion, and accessories. This disease struck in all social classes of society and was not dependent on status, wealth, sanitary conditions, or hygiene. Because of that, smallpox was sometimes referred to as the “democratic” disease (Skold,p.145) People believe that the Inca and Aztec empire likely collapsed because of smallpox. Hernan Cortes and his 300 men attacked the Aztec capital a force of 300,00 and captured the city within the span of three months. (Altman. p.42) This likely occurred because the Spaniards have had years of exposure to smallpox due to Columbus crossing the Atlantic from Europe to Africa and carrying the disease. (Dobson,p.130) On the other hand, the Aztecs and Incas were not immune to the ravages of the disease and quickly became weak which led to the collapse of the civilizations. (Altman, p.42)…

Although shingles normally go away, for some people it can cause serious complications. One of the complications of shingles are post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). Post-heretic neuralgia can be extremely painful, but usually goes away within a few months, but for some people it can last years. The older one is, the more likely they are to develop PHN. Other complications such as pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness, encephalitis, or death are possible, but are very…

The majority of cases do not in fact display any visual symptoms, therefore, with the spread of RRV increasing due to climate change, it may be difficult to discern whether the virus has invaded a new area. However, in cases where symptoms are recognisable, they may persist for up to 6 weeks, or a year or two in most incidences, and 10% of the time the virus can lead to ongoing depression and fatigue (Barber et al. 2009). These symptoms may include muscle aches, fatigue, rashes, swollen lymph nodes with the most frequently occurring symptom being debilitating joint pain. The joints most affected are wrists, knees, ankles, fingers, elbows, shoulders and jaw, similar to arthritis (Barber et al.…

Some of the non-specific symptoms of SLE include extreme fatigue, fever, weight loss and lymphadenopathy which is a disease affecting the lymph nodes. Some of the more unique symptoms of SLE are butterfly-shaped rashes or sun-induced macules on the face, generalized rash on a part of the body, and hyperpigmentation. Some of the most common features found while observing patients with SLE is joint inflammation and oral ulcers. Ninety percent of patients with SLE have joint inflammation such as arthritis, tendinitis, or early morning stiffness in the knees, wrist and hands. And fifty percent have mucosal ulceration, which is usually oral (Bernknopf et al., 2011).…
