The ship fairy’s talisman is her cell phone. She uses the cell phone to send the ship names into people’s heads. Without her phone, she wouldn’t have her job. She protects this phone with her life because it is such a major key in spreading ship names to the general public. Her phone is so precious to her if she did lose it or break it, she would die. While I was strolling on the beachfront, I happened upon a bottle under the slowly rolling waves. I picked it up, unscrewed the cork cap, took out the parchment coiled inside, and rolled it out on the fine sand to read the message. When she finds the boat she begins to carve her name into it in an attempt to be remembered by the outside world. All she ever longed for was a connection to the world she had only experienced through a mirror for so long. This seemed in a way ironic because she was a “fairy” wanting to become like everyone else around her, and typically it is mortal humans that are wanting to become like other beings. She knew her fate as “down she lay” and even embraced her death after all that she had experienced and gone…

In “The Necklace”, Guy de Maupassant used the image of reality to replace all unrealistic feature of a fairy tale. Mathilde Loisel is the main character of the story. Mathilde was “one of those pretty and charming girls born, as though fate had blundered over her, into a family of artisans” (Maupassant 1) but she and her husband Mr.Loisel now lived in poverty. Every day, she dreamed about a luxurious life, she wanted everyone recognized and desired her charming like other girl in her class. Maupassant wisely replaced the image of Cinderella in Mathilde. They both came from high class family but end up with harsh life, and both beauties wanted to make a change. Mathilde and Cinderella both lived in their world, separated from the surrounding. Unlike Cinderella, Mathilde made her own shell, because she ashamed of poverty and envied her friend wealthy. This is one aspect of reality compare with fairy tales; any one in her situation will feel the same. That does not mean that we should feel depressed or dreaming but this is our nature. The figure of Gad fairy mother also did not show up, in replace there was Madame Forestier, who was an old friend of Madame Loisel. Two characters, Madame Loisel and the fairy, both shared many same points. They all help the main character when she was in need. They all generously gave the main character the most valuable things the glass slipper in Cinderella and the necklace in The Necklace, and more…

At some point in our lives we are all charmed by the magic found in fairy tales. Beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiering in 1937, Disney set the standard for fairy tale movies that continue to entertain today. With Snow White’s love and connection with nature, being tricked by a witch, and then saved by a prince, there is no doubt this is a fairy tale. Cinderella seems to be one of the most recognized fairy tales with her fairy godmother, a pumpkin that turns into a carriage, and her marriage to the prince. Sleeping Beauty is another highly recognized fairy tale with an evil fairy that turns into a dragon and then prince charming saves the princess and her kingdom. While all of these movies are fairy tale’s they don’t include all of the same elements. The question becomes, what makes a fairy tale a fairy tale? I argue that the movie Beauty and the Beast is a fairy tale because the characters set out into the world alone, make abrupt physical and emotional changes, and there is death and resurrection involved.…
