The poster by Maria Voron, “Shock-brigade Reaping for a Bolshevik Harvest” is an amazing piece of artwork published in 1934 that shows the key principles of collectivism. The collectivist ideology is key in the Bolshevik philosophy which is also known as the communist party as they where renamed after the October Revolution of 1917. The poster uses images of people working together to promote unity and equality, showing the strength the people create when working together towards a common goal. Equality plays an important role in this image as well, showing that no individual is above another and each person must help work to reach their goal. Overall, Maria Vorons poster shares the basic principles of collectivism like unity and equality but also begs the question of if you can have real equality in a collectivist society.
The second source argues the idea that collectivism is much more embedded into peoples lives than they think. In the image people can be seen on the side of a busy street trying to protest taxes in their country; this could be for a variety of reasons like they think it infringes their economic and political rights or they may not understand what that money is being used for. The author of the source believes that “Governments are necessary and desirable” but also need to be limited and “modest in aim”. The sources are saying that although government support and some sort of structure is important, society will do better left on its own. In an individualistic society, people are able to make their own economic decisions and it leaves the individual to be responsible for themselves. The source states that the government should “respect the foundational elements” which are individuals principles, values and prioritizing personal autonomy. The source believes that it is important for people to have these rights and it would improve society if it was independent from the government. By allowing society to be a “civil society” individuals are able to seek out what interests them and be able to thrive through
