Short Essay On Lacrosse
Lacrosse has been an important part of my identity for many years. I started playing in middle school because I didn’t have a ride home from a friend’s house and he had practice that day. Since then, it has been a guiding hand in who I am as person. Lacrosse has made me someone who is passionate, hardworking, and a leader. When I started playing lacrosse, I wasn’t exactly an athlete, I was a regular on the bench, and I did not really care about what was happening on the field, I was just their because that’s what my friends were doing. As time went by and I started playing more, I realized that I was not half bad at the sport and my love for it blossomed. Lacrosse was all I spoke about, thought of, and did. It would be a surprise to see me around my house without a stick and I even wrote my first research paper on the origins of lacrosse. At …show more content…
Being one of the oldest and most experienced members of my team, it is my time to step up and head my team. It is important for me to influence our players and try to get them to play to the best of their ability. I believe the best way for me to do this is to set a good example for them, especially the younger players. I can recall the seniors when I was a freshman and all the impact they had on me. Being a leader on my team is a task that I am excited for and believe I am prepared for. Lacrosse teaches me many valuable lessons that make me who I am today. Through lacrosse I learned to be passionate and care about something that is bigger than I am. I became more diligent through the sport. It taught me that hard work pays off and that I should always try my best. Because of lacrosse, I also developed a sense of what it means to be a leader and how to act as one. I am grateful for these valuable characteristics that I have developed through playing lacrosse and I know that they will help me in the near future and the

This game was introduced in 1750 by the Mohawk tribe. Iroquois loved to play lacrosse because it was a source of entertainment, physical conditioning, and it was also a religious celebration as a way to honor the Creator. One of the highly celebrated traditions goes back to the Iroquois Confederacy where young warriors staged a lacrosse game for one of the league founders, Hayewat-ha, to console him for the loss of his children. Not only is lacrosse played to please the Creator but also is a rite that is sacred to the Thunders, the seven honored grandfathers who move across the sky from west to east cleansing the earth with wind and rains. Often times, lacrosse is prescribed as a ritual healing, usually recommended through a dream or fortune teller.…

As a freshman, I made the varsity volleyball team. With this position came a lot of responsibility and pressure. My teammates always looked at me as the “baby”, but they expected me to play at the same level as the seniors. I learned how to deal with difficult personalities and I learned how to commit myself to a team and a sport. I also learned that I was a role model to other teammates and young volleyball players. Just like the Pink Ranger, people looked up to me and I tried to lead by example throughout my volleyball career.…

I play a sport that’s not very popular. I play rugby. I’ve tried other sports before, but none really interested me as much as rugby. I started playing when I was a freshman at Lakeview high school. Starting at a new school I didn’t know anyone and I thought maybe a sport would help meet some people. I heard about rugby and decided to try it out. Deciding to try rugby was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. One reason rugby is unique is because you have to be flexible and adaptable. It also promotes responsibility, and creates bonds that I just don’t think other sports can.…

One of the biggest leaders that helped change the Native American sport into its modern version seen today was a Canadian dentist by the name of Dr. William George Beers. Beers was a lacrosse fanatic, who had been introduced to the sport at a very early age in the French colonies in upper North America. As one historian points out as Beers grew older, “He became obsessed with the need for some sort of controlled play, some codification that would stabilize the erratic nature of the Indian sport and at the same time standardize lacrosse to eliminate the petty squabbles over technicalities that characterized so many Canadian games.” (Vennum 254) Beers became the main leader of these Caucasian lacrosse clubs in Canada that were being dominated…

Competitive Sports like football and baseball or Lacrosse are often very risky on children and even adults, and because the rules of the game are the same, and the same game plans and actions are used in both local games and even nationals, it makes the game more competitive than friendly, which mostly results in major physical and psychological injuries. Statsky stated in her article “ Highly organized competitive sports such as Peewee Football and Little League Baseball are too often played to adult standards, which are developmentally inappropriate for children and can be both physically and psychologically harmful “. From my own experience of playing Lacrosse in freshman high school, I developed more cons than pros, which was the opposite of I thought of sports. During my first season I was a beginner that wanted to learn more, and in my mind I figured that the games wouldn’t be advanced, but then I got surprised of how vicious the other team played, and it resulted in many major injuries that made the game less exciting and more freighting. Winning became a goal that everyone wanted to reach no matter what the consequences. And families and coaches play a big role on controlling the mind of the players and forcing them to even injure others in order to win, and that losing is shameful, like what Statsky said “because they emphasize competition and winning, they unfortunately provide occasions for some parents and coaches to place their own fantasies and needs ahead of children's welfare”.…

Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America, having been played by Native American tribes long before any European had even set foot on the continent. A century after European missionaries discovered the game played by Native Americans, they began to play it themselves, starting in the 18th century. From there, it evolved and grew in popularity from a very savage game that resembled war, into what it is today, a recreational sport played widely in America and other countries. As U.S. Lacrosse literature aptly puts it "Lacrosse is a game born of the North American Indian, christened by the French, adopted and raised by the Canadians, and later dominated by the Americans."…

Organized sports have a lot of effects on children, whether they be positive or negative. Children are still finding out who they are and what the world is like. I chose this topic because I wanted to know childrens’ motives to do organized sports, and what effects the sports have on the them. I wanted to know the reasons kids start playing sports and, while it may be different for every child, they all had to have had some say in it. Every sport has skills that benefit children such as learning leadership, creating realistic goals they can achieve and learning to get along with others. Children also learn about personal discipline. “What's even more interesting is that kids derive those benefits whether or not they excel at their chosen sport” (Mary Forgione). When I first saw this quote I was really surprised over the fact that children learn these important life lessons even if they aren’t good at their sport. Ever since I had the chance, I played baseball. Why? I don’t really…

Field hockey has taught me some of the basic values of life and has changed my morals as well. I learned to respect all players, coaches and referees. I learned that I can be a good player and play hard – yet, still be courteous and kind on the playing field. This sport has taught me how to love myself, my teammates, and to become the best athlete I can be, through important lessons that I can incorporate on and off the field. It will hold a place in my heart even after I can no longer suit up to play in my stinky goalie gear, and I will always appreciate…
