It was really awkward to walk in and, by God, it smelled atrocious. It reminded me of I soon came to realize that it was a smell that only a goalie would learn to appreciate. After learning the fundamentals of being a goalie, I soon learned to love the position. Over the last four years of goaltending, I have found something that I can call my own, which I do with vigor and excitement. Even though our team wasn’t as skilled as the others and didn’t make it to the next level after the regular season, we played with heart, and with a sense of togetherness. We held strong in the toughest of situations and came out stronger at the end. The game of field hockey is my pride and joy. It is all together, my stress reliever, my reason for being stressed and for now, the reason why I want to succeed in school and life.
Field hockey has taught me some of the basic values of life and has changed my morals as well. I learned to respect all players, coaches and referees. I learned that I can be a good player and play hard – yet, still be courteous and kind on the playing field. This sport has taught me how to love myself, my teammates, and to become the best athlete I can be, through important lessons that I can incorporate on and off the field. It will hold a place in my heart even after I can no longer suit up to play in my stinky goalie gear, and I will always appreciate
