ACT 1

Scene 1

(CAMERA FADE IN SLOWLY, the street is quiet. CAMERA PANS CLOSER IN A SALON BESIDE THE ROAD. We hear the narrator)

Narrator: It was a regular sunny day for the barber, who had just finished up cutting an old friend's hair. As he cleaned up his station from his previous cut, someone very unexpected, yet familiar to the barber, enters.

(Camera focuses on the customer's face as he enters the barber shop. Camera pans left and centers on the barber, who is carefully sharpening his razor. He stops what he is doing once he sees the customer come in.)

Barber: (Looks away and continues to sharpen.)

Torres: (Takes off his belt and hat and hangs it on the wall. He turns to the barber.) Good afternoon.

Barber: (Nervously) Good afternoon.

Torres: (Leans against the wall and wipes a drop of sweat from his forehead) It's hot as hell. Give me a shave.

(Camera focuses on the barber's face, who is clearly nervous as you can see him gulp. His eyes scan Torres' face)

Barber: (Nods as he begins to cut up small pieces of soap. He places the soap in a cup and mixes it with water. Continues to stir but doesn't look up to make eye contact.) What kind of shave do you want?

Torres: (Shrugs) Just shave it all.

Barber: (Stirs in a slow manner, but his eyes dart over to Torres for a quick second before returning his gaze back to the soap) The other boys in the group should have this much beard, too.

Torres: (Laughs and shrugs) But we did all right, you know. We got the main ones. We brought back some dead, and we've got some others still alive. But pretty soon they'll all be dead.

Barber: How many did you catch?

Secondly, the barber would have been a coward because he would have to flee leaving all he had behind. He was well aware that he would have to run and thus he made a statement, “I would have to flee, leaving all I had behind, and take a refuge far away” (51). He would have to run, saving himself from Torres’ people. As he would have killed the captain cowardly, he had to hide his face from the society. He would have to find places to hide himself from Torres’ people. He might also have to lose his job. Furthermore, the barber would have been a coward because, he was vulnerable. He was weak and afraid of killing captain Torres, especially with his eyes open. Thus, when the captains’ eyes were closed, he whispered, “I could cut his throat just so – Zip, Zip! I would not give him time to resist and since his eyes were closed he would not see the glistening blade and my glistening eyes” (50). The barber would have thought that as the captains’ eyes were closed he might not come to know about his thoughts. The barber would even not give him the chance to perform any such actions which would create problems for him. Thus all such thoughts of the barber, about killing the…

This cuts to a dark medium-wide shot of what appears like a silhouette of the character. With a pan, it remains dark until a desk light is turned on, revealing a crowded and seemingly disorganized office space. Another cut reveals a medium-close shot of the main character with overhead lighting that is supposed to be coming solely from the desk lamp. This relatively stationary shot, only panning when the characters moves, focuses on the distraught character trying to comfort and make sense of the proceeding events to the clip. This relatively dialogue free shot reveals not much to the audience; only that this character would like to record observations. This shot is very crowded with visuals which also add to the confusing theme being portrayed. One final cut to a close up shot with similar lighting finally gives the audience insight into the mind of the character as they begin noting their observations. This shot is clear from distractions and gives the audience some relief and closure that has been build up with the proceeding cuts. Altogether there are 5 different shots being presented, all of which have very distinct length and composure that proceed to confusion and closure to the audience, as well as a smooth development…
