In the book In Cold Blood, Truman Capote tells the tragic story of the Clutter murderers and the victims of the murder in Holcomb, Kansas. After hearing about the murder, Capote felt like this story was perfect to start his new project on. He went to Kansas to interview, meet, and do everything he could to get as much information on this event as possible. The different style choices, perspectives, evidence and descriptions Capote chooses to utilize in telling this story are used to not only help the reader visualize what went on, but to also manipulate the story to tell only what he wants the reader to know as he focuses on explaining his beliefs. Through his work, Capote emphasizes how easily perspectives can be altered or biased when it comes to the…
In the first paragraph, it’s almost one huge, long paragraph intended to exhaust the reader in his/her reading, just like it did Kempner to actually be there. In paragraph two, he inserts the short, seven-word sentence, “So goes about $50,000 worth of ammo.” He does this to make it different and to draw attention to it. He could have put it into the sentence right before it, but he puts it by itself to make a point and show how wasteful it was. He includes sentences that have five words all the way up to ones that have ninety-four words along with simple and compound-complex sentences that draw your attention and make you follow…
The excerpt from In Cold Blood, written by Truman Capote, represents a remarkable example of using suspense to interest the reader into learning key details. Understanding that his reader will not find an ordinary town interesting, Capote displays details so that they appear vivid, even if they aren’t. Truman's writing works in direct reference to the setting of the story: accent, local language and slang. Holcomb, the name of this town, is “dry” and nothing has happened in the area up to this point. Capote uses creative structure and imagery, as well as diction to highlight the indifferent life of the People in Holcomb.…
Barack Obama our president of the United States of America once again wants to issue another executive order. Only this time, he wants to take away one of my civil liberties. Civil liberties are my God given rights that will not be taken away by anyone. Each American is entitled to civil liberties and President Obama has no earthly power or authority to revoke any of these rights. This particular executive order will “[ban] all firearms except for those required by employment” (XXX). Thus, I will no longer be able to operate Willie’s Gun Store, the business that I own. Moreover, I would not be able to make a stable income to provide for my two daughters to continue their college education. By the first amendment I am entitled to freedom…
The book begins and ends with descriptions of the landscape; the serenity of the plains is an unlikely setting for a tragedy, which makes it all the more disturbing when one does occur. The book starts by taking the “long view” of its subjects, outlining them from a distance before eventually zooming in to probe the microscopic details of the case, a trajectory that reflects Capote's own dealings with the residents of Holcomb and Garden City. Here, also, Capote compares the landscape to that of ancient Greece, indicating that the story contained in these pages has larger significance as an examination of timeless human themes.…

James Q. Wilson writes in " Gun Control Isn't the Answer" about Americans having the right to own guns freely. He states that the rates of death will continue to rise even if there are gun laws. Gun control laws are laws that manage the sales, transfers, and possessions of firearms. In today's society the possessions of guns have skyrocketed through the roof, which is a great reason to have these laws. Contrary to what the author states, gun control is needed because our children are unsafe, homicide rates are rising, and the wrong people have guns.…
Justin Cronin the writer of “Confessions of a Liberal Gun Owner” states that you should be able to own guns. You should be able to exercise your rights and express your beliefs on gun ownership. All should be done with the right precautions and safety. The effectiveness of this essay makes it a convincing, because he states his arguments and he also states possible counter arguments.…
The unique arrangement of the short story coincides with the suspense of it. In the first section, Bierce portrays Peyton Farquhar as being trapped in a near death situation, as a result of committing an unknown crime. The readers become engulfed in following what will happen to the young man that is about to be hanged, but then the scene abruptly stops. The second section begins in a flashback, and because of the sudden shift in scenery and mood, the anticipation from the first section increases.…

I lay in my backyard, staring at the clear night sky. ((((((My blond hair is spread out in a halo around my head, which I would imagine makes me look similar to an angel. I find the thought of me as an angel so funny, that I almost laugh out loud. I am nothing like an angel. Not even close.))))))…
In the last section of the piece, the writer has tried to instil a sense of urgency. Using quicker dialogue coupled with the use of the exclamation mark such as “What do you mean, you can’t, God damn it!” and “Listen to me, listen, get your gun ready!” and short creative bursts of description like “the hangers were dusting down in soft red rust” and the “aeroplanes were blowing away on a brown rust wind” add momentum and propels the piece forward. The writer also made use of ellipsis to convey tension in the way the Guard was hesitant about saying what was happening and the things he was seeing as in “My gun… it’s…” All these things combined to make the reader, read with intensity to get to the final twist in the tale.…
