Inventor Ruth Handler fostered a major shift in the toy industry. In 1945, she had already founded the company, Mattel Creations (now Mattel Inc., one of the largest toy manufacturing competitors in the world). It wasn’t until 1959, however, that Handler introduced the world to a new kind of doll, inspired by her daughter, Barbara. According to the book, The Barbie Chronicles: A Living Doll Turns Forty, Handler’s game-changing idea sparked when she and her children encountered a similar three-dimensional German doll, Bild Lilli (FIG 5), that year during a trip to Europe.27…
Finding the occupational therapy assistant program at CCAC has helped me dedicate myself to a very important career path. While in high school at South Park, I was on the swim team and was the captain during my last year. While being involved with swimming, I also taught swimming lessons to children for five years. I have also been a dedicated employee at the South Park Clubhouse for the past six years and I'm still there. For two years of high school, I volunteered at a nonprofit haunted house, Hundred Acres Manor. I did all of this all while maintaining good grades.…
Ruth’s occupation is also relevant because as a ghost writer she is in the shadows of the writing process but a very critical part of the process in itself. Although Ruth is not an actual ghost, she does act as one in the sense that she writes the material for a client who will take credit as the author. When she was younger, Ruth communicated between LuLing and Precious Auntie via writing in the sand with chopsticks, and as an adult she is still communicating others’ ideas through her writing (Dunick 12-13). This is significant to Ruth’s strength as a female writer in the sense that she “had never experienced such power with words” (Tan 78) considering women are often seen as weak and powerless. However, she refrains from using that very same…

I never thought I’d be able to experience a college level course in high school and pass it with an above average grade, more than a “C”. It wasn’t easy though, the journey I’ve made from semester to semester has been a slow one and required more than half my effort and time. I’ve definitely grown not only as a writer but as a student overall through completion of several term papers and activities. As I reflect on this school year, I am thankful for enrolling and for the experience SUPA History has given me. The materials and objectives of SUPA History has given me the confidence to feel capable of meeting college standards upon my arrival to a university.…
