SUPA History Reflection Paper
I never thought I’d be able to experience a college level course in high school and pass it with an above average grade, more than a “C”. It wasn’t easy though, the journey I’ve made from semester to semester has been a slow one and required more than half my effort and time. I’ve definitely grown not only as a writer but as a student overall through completion of several term papers and activities. As I reflect on this school year, I am thankful for enrolling and for the experience SUPA History has given me. The materials and objectives of SUPA History has given me the confidence to feel capable of meeting college standards upon my arrival to a university.
The first term paper I was assigned stressed me out! I was so overwhelmed by the thought of having to write at a college level and how my professor, Ms.Kelly, was going to grade us by college standards. Although I was a nervous wreck, I scored a solid 80%. As I reviewed my actions taken towards completing the essay, I realized that I had waited till two days before the due date to start it and I didn’t feel confident in my thesis or essay layout. I remember making myself a mental note weeks before it was due to conference with my teacher for reassurance of the direction of which my essay’s focus was going however, I continuously procrastinate and pushed it to the back of mind. When I actually did start it, it was too late to make a conference. From that first essay I’ve learned a lot. Procrastination not only escalated my stress levels but hindered myself from performing at its most greatest capability, which could have earned me a higher score.
As the year progressed, I adjusted my habit to starting the term paper at least eight days prior to its due date, giving myself plenty of time to review, research, and conference with Ms. Kelly. Although I didn’t conference with Ms. Kelly for every essay, I at least had the time to have some other educated person proof-read it. My term paper grade remained a 80%

Like me, many students believe that procrastinating and writing a one-draft paper is the best way to approach a writing assignment; however, research claims this method has numerous negative effects on the individual. Therefore, other students and I should learn to begin their writing process in advance in order to avoid the feelings of fatigue, guilt, and anxiety after turning in an important…

Hammurabi’s Code and Ben Zhao’s Instruction manual for Women, both establish similar gender norms about the female sex. One example of a gender norm established by the two is the emphasis of a women’s protection of her purity before marriage. For example Hammurabi’s code states “Again, there must be no marriage with a prostitute, since by reason of the abuse of her body. God could not accept her nuptial sacrifices.”(pg. 16). The code says that a women’s virginity is sacred and a gift given to God and her husband at marriage, it is her virtue and without it she has nothing of value. There is also a similar opinion given in Ben Zhao’s instructions that says “To guard carefully her chastity; to control circumspectly her behavior; in every motion to exhibit modesty; and to model each act on the best usage, this is womanly virtue” (Ben Zhao). He is essentially saying the same thing, a women’s chastity is what makes her respectable and gives her validity. However, while Both Hammurabi’s Code and Ben Zhao’s manual share similar gender norms, they also establish gender norms that are the opposite of each other, such as the behavior and role of women in society. For example Ben Zhao says “Let a woman modestly yield to others; 1et her respect others; let her put others first, herself last. Should she do something good, let her not mention it; should she do something bad let her not deny it. Let her bear disgrace; let her even endure when others speak or do evil to her.”(Ben Zhao). Ben Zhao believes that a women’s role is to please others, never themselves, to do good and receive nothing, but be punished and humiliated for wrong doing. However King Hammurabi thinks the opposite “If a women quarrel with her husband… the reasons for her prejudice must be presented. If she is guiltless… but he leaves and neglects her, then no guilt is attached to this women; she shall take her dowry and return to her father’s house” (pg.…

Since the 1700’s political, economic and intellectual changes have radically altered the history of the world. They have had a major impact on the production and distribution of goods, the scale of warfare, and the rise and fall of the totalitarian dictators. The production and distribution of goods affected people’s lives completely. New innovations and new inventions spurred the industrial growth. The scale of warfare was resulted from Militarism, the Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism; also from the new technology and weapons. The rise of totalitarian dictators was one of the major changes that altered the history of the world. Each of the impacts has affected the history of the world significantly.…

I had to plan ahead in order to make sure that I accomplish the assignments for this class while still attending the board meetings for the organizations I was a part of. By looking at my Participation paper I was there for a majority of my class days and the only reason I missed class was because of really bad allergies and when I received bronchitis for week and a half. By going to class I was able to get tips on how to make my work better and how to accomplish the tasks given to us better thus making it less stressful for me to finish the project meaning I was more likely to finish the project earlier than the time given to us. When I realized that going to class and doing my work before the due date made me less stressed out I tried my hardest to always finish my work in all my class on time making me have a less stressful week. Another example of my improvement in this area is when we look at my Communication improvement profile paper written in the beginning of the year. I wrote the paper the night before and really didn’t look at the rule brick on how everything needed to be organized. When looking at this paper I followed the rule brick the best I can and wrote this paper before the due date allowing me to continually correct the grammar mistakes I have made and other problems that could have been found in this paper. Taking…

The difference between colonial women and women in today’s world is quite significant. Colonial women had nowhere near the amount of civil rights that women have today. Being a woman in colonial times, women may have noticed the need for change in their civil rights. This could be the main reason why colonial women chose to leave their life behind after being captured by the Natives and create a new identity or life with their tribe.…

English has always been one of my worst subjects. I would always second guess myself on the correct writing method and what punctuation to use and when to use it. Taking this English class has allowed me to analyze and reflect on my work. My first essay I received a B grade. An option to revise the paper for a better grade was given. This allowed me to see my errors and correct them for improvement. The second essay was my interpretation of the story “Hills Like White Elephants.” Surprisingly there was instant improvement on that assignment. I had received an A grade without any revision needed. That felt really good to know I had the potential to do better. That was my motivation getting through the semester. The progress in my work does show, except on essay #4. I had written a lot of fragment sentences which brought my A work down to a B paper. Honestly I didn’t really take time on that assignment. It was typed up the night before it was do and that was sloppy on my part.…

The main problem students have with writing essays is not knowing how to manage their time well. Often times, we procrastinate because we choose to do other things instead. Given a 1-2 week time period to complete an essay seems like a lot of time until procrastination takes over. Writer's block, and distractions are a huge contribution to procrastinating as well. Sometimes you just don't know where to start when you write an essay, or your ideas and words may not flow together. You'll try over, and over again but it just doesn't sound right. As a result, you become discouraged and leave it to do “later.” Instead of trying to write your essay, you get distracted by your phone, favorite show, or computer. This easily makes “later” become the night before it's due, and by then we're struggling to cram in all of the other homework we have to do still.…

Walking into room 115 in the HSS building my first day of second semester as a freshman I had no idea what to expect, little did I know, I was in for a big surprise. English 214 has been a rollercoaster with its ups and downs, but it has taught me so much more than what I have learned my previous years of writing all put together. This course has challenged my thoughts and forced me into putting much more effort than any other class has needed, but at the end of the day it is all worth it. From learning about having a strong ethos, good paragraph structure, including frosting, and revision, revision, revision, this has slowly shaped me into becoming a better writer by putting more thought into my writing instead of just rushing through it.…

The essay was given to us a few days before the Thanksgiving holiday. The essay required a minimum of 800 words, prewriting, outline, ad a print copy of the rough draft so that it may be reviewed by another student. Since the essay was assigned a few days before Thanksgiving and was to make up at the next week, I though I had a lot of time to think about how I was going to organize the essay. But right when we got out for Thanksgiving break, this essay was the last thing on my mind. As the days passed, I would only work on the essay for a couple minutes then I would get…
