“Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable William Pollard.” The quote by William Pollard was a quote that held truth to me about not making changes to better ourselves and if we continue on this path of non-improvement then we will find ourselves left out of many different opportunities. I found this quote in the beginning of the 2013 spring semester, because of this quote I was able to stay dedicated to improve in what I lacked. In my communication 110 class I was able to improve on qualities of myself that I didn’t think I could really improve on. I was able to greatly improve …show more content…
three of my greatest weakness the first one is becoming nervous at public speaking, the second was how to effectively write a perfect outline, and the third was bettering my organization skills. My goals form my communication improvement profile paper changed dramatically because of my first paper I made goals such as making better eye contact, not using the words “umm” or pausing in a speech awkwardly, and how to become better in group work. I improved in all this areas because I made improvements by becoming a less nervous speaker, writing outlines correctly, and becoming a better organizer. Making improvement on the problems I found challenging was not easy and took a lot of dedication and time to overcome but when overcame they became a no brainier. My first improvement, was overcoming becoming nervous when public speaking. I have always hated public speaking with a passion. I found it scary, yet very necessary in life, because I like to be active within my community and run for positions that require me to public speak I knew this was something that I had to get over rather quickly. I can see this improvement by my grades during my informative speech, group speech, and persuasive speech.my first speech I was really nervous because I didn’t know what I should put in it that the teacher would like. I really wanted to get a good grade because for this class we don’t receive many grades. Luckily for me I had a friend who had taking this class before and was able to greatly help with any questions I had with the class. Being able to talk to her I was able to finish my outline in time for my speech. The upcoming days leading up to my speech made me more and more nervous it was like I was setting myself up for failure. Saying my speech isn’t as good as the speech I heard in class today maybe I should change it, what I can do better to improve my speech. When speech day finally came I gave my speech and was really nervous giving it. So when I saw my grade I was happy because I received a B on my informative speech on African American Women Hair. When I read some of the comments that were left on my paper like strong eye contact and I had strong movement I was really proud of myself but because of these comments I knew what I had to keep on doing for the rest of my speeches. Some of the requirements I made for myself was that I had to finish the outline at least a week in advance, practice my speech once a day, and let at least two people read my speech outline and listen to my speech. Meeting the requirements that I had set for myself enabled me to do okay on my first speech. I then transferred that same momentum I had for my first speech into my second and third speech and each time I was able to improve more and receive a good grade. As a result, from always meeting the requirements that I had set for myself I became better at creating outlines for my speeches. We can see how much I have improved in my speeches by looking at my first speech outline and compare it to my third speech. My first speech was my hardest speech because each teacher has different criteria that want us to have in our outline so having that pressure over my head made me stuck on how to go about writing my outline for this class. Then all changed when I was writing my last speech I knew exactly how I was going to write it and how I wanted it to sound. We can see this major improvement in my speech lab feedback form: Persuasive speech. She talked about how my speech gained people attention nicely, my main points where strong, and that my speech was very well done. If my outline was weak and unprofessional done then I would not be able to make a strong convincing argument to the audience I am trying to persuade. Another helpful tip I did was looked at all my speech outlines and went through them and noticing the errors that I made in my outlines. Looking at the group speech was really helpful because I was able to see different people techniques on writing a paper and being able to incorporate that into my own speech making my last speech something that I am really proud of. Everything that I did to prepare for my speeches allowed me to become better organized with my schedule with school and social life.
I had to plan ahead in order to make sure that I accomplish the assignments for this class while still attending the board meetings for the organizations I was a part of. By looking at my Participation paper I was there for a majority of my class days and the only reason I missed class was because of really bad allergies and when I received bronchitis for week and a half. By going to class I was able to get tips on how to make my work better and how to accomplish the tasks given to us better thus making it less stressful for me to finish the project meaning I was more likely to finish the project earlier than the time given to us. When I realized that going to class and doing my work before the due date made me less stressed out I tried my hardest to always finish my work in all my class on time making me have a less stressful week. Another example of my improvement in this area is when we look at my Communication improvement profile paper written in the beginning of the year. I wrote the paper the night before and really didn’t look at the rule brick on how everything needed to be organized. When looking at this paper I followed the rule brick the best I can and wrote this paper before the due date allowing me to continually correct the grammar mistakes I have made and other problems that could have been found in this paper. comminucation110 class has made me more aware of that fact that I needed to become better at organizing my time and my work. For this reason I was able to slowly apply this to my daily life. Meeting my three goals was a big achievement but I did not complete all of my goals that I had set out to accomplish in this class. One goal that I did not achieve is improving my writing skill. Even when I was little I have always struggled with writing papers and outline for my class. Teachers would always say that you have great content but my grammar needs a lot of work. Though I have become better at writing outlines and papers from when I was little; I still need many people to look at my paper and proof read over it to check for grammatical errors. This has always been my biggest and hardest weakness that I really would have liked to overcome within in my communication 110 class. Even though there were some goals that I did not overcome like my grammar skills there are still many goals that I meet, like how I improved on becoming more comfortable talking in front of large groups and also learning how to creating a proper outline helped me become a better organizer within this class and my everyday life.
All my goals lead into each other helping me grow and develop into a better person that can now be ready for change. By having the right mindset and setting out to do the goals I said I would I have overcome so much in such a little amount of time. Just like how William Pollard said it best in his quote that I had quoted earlier in my paper about those who are not ready to make that change will be left behind and I for sure do not want to be left
behind.

Evaluation challenge
During my time in communication 110 I have learnt many interesting facts about how to better improve. Always trying my best to get a good grade within the class is always my goal. Along with receiving good grades out of the class there is also other acts that I think should be factored in when calculating my grade. The grade that I think I should get is a 90 percent in the class which would mean me getting an A out of the class. The reason I feel I deserve a 90 percent is because of my attendance, my work ethic, and completing the goals I set to overcome. These are the three main reasons I feel I should get an A out of the Class. I have been very good at attending all communication 110 classes. The only time I didn’t go to class is either when I had bad allergies or when I had bronchitis for a week and half you can see the days I missed by looking at my participation paper. On January23, 2013 and on March 22, 2013 I had really bad allergies on those days. On the days my allergies flare up I get really sick. My eyes are red and puffy, I am coughing all day, sneezing, and congested all day. The medicine I take during periods like those takes time to take effect usually I am fine within a day of being sick because of my medicine. Even when I was sick during those times I asked Grace what we had done during that class time and what needed to be turned in for class. Even though I was sick I still had a responsibility to find out the work that I had missed and to try and keep up with the rest of my class. The other three days was during April on Wednesday 3, 2013, Friday 5, 2013, and Monday 8, 2013. Those are the days I had bronchitis which resulted in my coughing all day. I went to the doctor to check why I was coughing so much and she said that I have all the symptoms of bronchitis, which is a respiratory infection. She then told me that I should stay home for a couple of days. I also didn’t want to risk my professor getting sick since she told us that she has upper respiratory infection and since Mrs.Owen’s was just released from the hospital after having major surgery I didn’t want to chance it being contagious and transferring it to anyone. I still emailed Mrs.Owen’s email address to tell her that I will not be able to attend class. I gave her the reason I could not attend class and tell her I have a doctor’s note. I still tried hard to stay with the class but it was harder because I was really focused on getting better because I didn’t want the bronchitis to get more serious. Though it was harder I still managed to get a majority of what we learned and information from my classmates. Even though I was sick for five day I was there for the rest of communication 110 class as we can see in my participation paper. I never skipped class because I wanted to and I also went to class a majority of the time in communication 110 class.
My work ethics was really something I was proud of because I tried really hard in this class to participate in class. I went to class everyday making sure to participate by answering questions, taking notes, and asking questions on information that I did not understand. Any time the teacher asked us a question I made sure to lookup the answer and be able to answer it. The information that was being taught to be better retained in my memory aiding me in writing my outlines and group work. I also did not just answered questions I also to extensive notes during class time and if I did not bring my notebook which did not happen often I would go back to my room and reread the chapter and takes notes on the chapter we talked about in class. I also participated in class by asking questions when I did not understand a topic that we were discussing in class making me have a better understanding of the material less complicated and easier to comprehend.
I also overcame obstacles that I never thought I would get over. Many people write about what they want to get accomplished but not many people actually set out to achieve their goals. I went out of my way to reach my goals by overcoming my three greatest obstacles that I have always dealt with. The first one is being nervous during public speaking, the second was writing a professional outline for speech, and the last was improving my organizational skills. The more I would think about speaking in front of a crowd the more I wanted to just drop the class and take it later. Sticking it out and finding ways to cope with the pressure of public speaking has helped me greatly. By not dropping the class and sticking to communication 110 shows that I am dedicated and I also finish what I start. The second goal was to improve on writing an outline. I have written so many different outlines at my high school so when coming to communication 110 I did not know what kind of information my professor would want in the outline. Yet seeking out friends help and making connection within the classroom I was able to ask questions to my fellow classmates. This helped me also greatly improve my outline because everyone would give me tips on how to do it better or help point out my grammatical errors within my outline. This shows that I will seek out information and the answer to my questions showing my dedication to always try to improve one’s self. My last goal that I overcame this semester because of me taking communication 110 class is improving my organizational skills. By overcoming my first two goals the third just happened because in order to complete the first and the second goals I had to be better organized in order to be able to ask questions and give people a good amount of time to think about what they want to say and be able to respond to the question. Also in order for me not to be a nervous speaking I had to finish my outline at least one week in advance so I could have my friends read over it and help me find the grammatically errors and also practice saying my speech so I would feel overly prepared making me less nervous on giving my speech to my class. By me going and trying to accomplish my goals and actually overcoming my problems shows that I am dedicated to working hard and improving myself.
In conclusion, I feel I should get a 90 percent out of my communication 110 class. The reason I feel this way is because I always make sure to attend a majority of my classes, my dedication to work hard, and to always try to accomplish the goals I say I want to achieve. There are many people in the world that cannot finish what the set out to accomplish but it is the opposite for me. I am fortunate enough have that dedication and the knowledge to make it happen. Without dedication, ethics, and goals we cannot move forward as people and as a society.
