TREASURE
The hot sand stung their bare feet with each step they drew closer to the sea. They walked until they found the cool refuge of the wet ground before it and lifted their eyes. The sea rose in front of them, vast and welcoming. Its surface glittered, stretching as far as the eye could see, and waves after waves raced and stumbled and slid, foaming, trying to reach their tiny feet. "Come on!" shouted a boy behind them. "Why are you just standing there?" They turned their heads and saw him sprinting towards them, passing them and charging into the water with a diving finale. He disappeared from sight and seconds later he erupted out of the sea triumphantly, bombarding their warm bodies with wet spikes. "Come on! The water is so warm!" he said and skimmed the water surface with his palm, sending more spikes towards them. The two kids backed off to the burning sand. "Leave your brothers alone, Tom!" a man's voice shouted from behind. He was sitting on a beach chair under a yellow-blue umbrella, and besides him a woman who was lying on a towel outside the shade. Tom dove into the water and swam away, and the two boys felt safe enough to approach the sea, just outside the waves' reach. "You first," said the rounded boy, Ricky. "Okay," replied the smaller kid, Eddy. He took a deep breath and ran into the water with a battle cry. After few steps his slender feet stumbled and lost balance, and he fell. Instinctively he closed his eyes before the water engulfed him in its warm embrace and all outside noise was silenced by the quiet murmur of the sea. It whispered calmly in his ear and carried him gently. But his instincts called again and he started kicking and punching underwater, rising up with the bubbles of air that escaped and went to reunite with the air above. His head emerged, his blond hair covering his eyes, and he gasped for breath. "It's warm," Ricky said besides him, who was advancing step by step. He stopped waist-deep in the water and sat down so his

I used to believe I was a good writer. Throughout my elementary school education, creative writing dominated curriculum which allowed my extremely creative mindset to thrive. In middle school, I developed an elitist mentality about my writing ability. Believing that I reached my academic peak, I felt no need to sharpen my writing skills, causing me to become close minded to critique or other writing styles. Upon entering high school, I still clung to the idea that I was the best, but after my first week of class, I realized how weak my writing skills were in contrast to those of other students. Now, I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and hope to have come far from my middle school self.…

The Chapel I sat in was lined with wooden pews, unadorned as befitted the sombre mood. Inside the atmosphere was oppressive and a faint mustiness hung in the air. I was vaguely aware of the murmurs and rustlings of the other mourners as they took their seats. I dabbed my eyes with the hanker-chief as the deeply moving and melancholy chords of “Amazing Grace” began to filter through the stony walls.…

The narrative deals with the problems of Parvez, who has migrated to England with his son Ali. Parvez worries because Ali’s behavior has changed significantly. Early in the story, Parvez is afraid of discussing his worries with his friends because his son has always been a kind of showpiece son. Eventually, Parvez breaks his silence and tells them how his son has changed, hoping to receive some advice. After having a short conversation, they come to the conclusion that his son might be addicted to drugs and that he sells his things to earn money to buy drugs. After this meeting, Parvez goes to his taxi to drive home. But in his car he finds Bettina, a prostitute, who drives with Parvez very often and has become a confidante. Since Parvez has defended Bettina from a client who had attacked her, they take care of each other. Parvez tells Bettina what he has observed and that he and his friends assume that his son does all these strange things because he is drug addicted. Bettina instructs Parvez on how he has to observe his son to find out if there is anything physically wrong with him. However, after a few days of observations Parvez decides that his son appears totally healthy. The only physical change Parvez observes is that Ali is growing a beard. And it turns out that his son does not sell his things. He just gives them away.…

Mom’s word stuck me like a lightning bolt. I was so shocked that I forgot to give reaction to what I had just heard. Maybe because a part of me still believed this couldn’t be true. Well, was it a joke? I looked back into mom’s eyes. She was still looking at me with pitiful look in her eyes, which showed me sympathy. I wanted to ask her if she was joking, but then I realised it would be hard to bear the pain if she said no. Instead I wanted for her to say something else or give a reaction. After a few seconds of dead silence and gazing into each other’s eyes, mom finally uttered a few words.…
