This research aims to answer the following question: “To what extent should Germany as a whole take responsibility for Hitler’s Holocaust?” Adolf Hitler is the name most commonly associated with the systematic mass murder of six million Jews in 1933. The genocide of Jewish people was conducted through mass shootings, truck gassing and extermination gas chambers. It was under Hitler’s rule and authority that this anti-Semitic driven atrocity took place.
It is, however, a common assumption to solely blame Hitler for the events of the Holocaust. It is rather difficult to imagine one man committing such an atrocity of an unimaginable scale without the co-operation and support of the majority of German people. It was interesting to discover through various sources that it was with the participation of ordinary Germans that Hitler could achieve his goals. Before conducting the research, I had expected to discover that majority of Germans were also responsible for this anti-Semitic driven atrocity, and at the end of the research, was justified by the evidence.
While conducting this research, I had hoped to obtain extracts from Hitler’s book ‘’Mein Kampf’’ which consists of his reflections, thoughts, motives and plans all written by him. I did find extracts, but struggled to cohesively blend it into my argument alongside my other sources. Perhaps I did not search effectively enough for an extract more relevant to my essay plan and structure. I realised now that not having the words of Hitler to strengthen my research, is a weakness as it could have provided a weighty counter to my
