In the united states there are 108k people on the waiting list, waiting for an organ to save their life. 18 people die everyday in the world, waiting for an organ. This is a very sad and serious matter. Imagine one of us were to die today, touch wood, would you want to save life by donating to the people who need it. I’m sure most of us would want to save lives, but unfortunately our family will be in the state of grieve. Family members will be emotionally disturbed because of their loss. They wouldn’t be able to think rationally, and also they have to balance the decision between keeping their family member in one piece and having a shot to save another person’s life. They are the people who most likely would be sad. They shouldn’t be burdened with this kind of decision at that point of time, and this is where the doctor comes into play. Doctor is the best person to decide because they’re medically qualified to determine the suitability of the organ to be transplanted and the chances of accepting the organ by the receiver. Besides, they’re not related to the patient, they are emotionally fit and therefore they are able to make a wiser decision.
Now, lets look at things from the receiver’s point of view. When you’re in need of the organ, I am sure you hope someone would able to donate you a suitable one. Your life will be saved by a dead person, think about it. Once again, if the decision has to be made by our family members, its really tough for them, as they want the body to be cremated in one piece. This will again, blind them from saving people’s life and it’s a really big burden for them.
