Should Mount Rainier Change Names
There is no doubt that name is significantly important for a place, especially for some famous landmarks. The Mount Rainier is very famous in Washington State, this is shown in the quote, “… appears on everything from t-shirts to license plates”. It shows that this mountain has a big influence among the locals. From my point of view, I support that Mount Rainier should change names due to historical, cultural and economic reasons. First of all, I strongly agree on the argument proposed by a group of Native Americans that “…changing the mountain’s name is a matter of pride and respect for Native Americans” because historically this mountain belonged to the aboriginals and people nowadays shouldn’t forget about it. Changing the name of this

The Canadian anthem “O' Canada” Should not be changed at all. The anthem is and always will be a big part of being Canadian, as well as the symbolism of Canada. The biggest thing that people remember as a kid growing is singing the national anthem in school every day and proudly standing in front of the Canadian flag. As Canada is a bilingual country it would be hard to transfer and make a new anthem that will be properly formatted for both languages without any uncanny expressions. Also as O' Canada has been the national anthem for over 32 years not there has been a lot of formal documents and government information that have quotes from the anthem. That will have to change as it would be irrelevant if the government of Canada has quotes from…

Most of the Native Americans that was in this campaign belong to the Oneida Indian Nation group. This Oneida Indian Nation group had a lot to say about this situation. Ray Halbritter, a representative for the Oneida Indian Nation said “ The use of such an Offensive term has negative consequences for the Native American community when it comes to issues of self-identity and imagery.” (Skinner). With this being said this issue spread to Native Americans everywhere and they would not stay quiet while others would disgrace their family’s…

Mount Rushmore may be a national wonder to many, however to the Native Americans, it's a disgrace to their culture. The monument is located on what was considered the holy land for most Native Americans. The Sioux knew the place as "Six Grandfathers”, but was changed to Mount Rushmore after a New York attorney named Rushmore asked what the mountain was called. The original vision of Mount Rushmore was to include four completely different faces; George Custer, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and Chief Red Cloud. Instead, they carved four famous presidents' faces into the stolen mountain. The story of this mountain is a tragic one, considering that this was a holy land, protected by one of the US's "trusty" treaties. The mountain that's so wonderful…

America is often known as the melting pot of the world, where all walks of life, culture, and religion come, meshing into new and intermingled ways. The reservation has a radio show, which is an amenity of American culture. It shows that they are trying to be more American by representing the traffic and weather reports in satirical way. Although they are making fun of Americans, the tribe is still trying to modern. During the radio show, the host uses the word indigenous, which in American society can often have a negative connotation. It is very similar to the gay community today, where the word queer, often used years ago as a way to oppress and be offensive towards a person of that community, is now embraced and used in a positive light to represent members of that specific…

Teams haven’t had to change their names or logos, so this means that people generally aren’t finding it offensive. According to a recent poll done by The Washington Post, it was determined that 9 in 10 Native Americans are not offended by the Redskins name. The question asked, “The professional football team in Washington calls itself the Washington Redskins. As a Native American, do you find that name offensive, or doesn’t it bother you?” According to their data, they showed that 90% said it did not bother them, a mere 9% said that it was offensive, and 1% had no opinion. I believe that these surveys, help take steps in the right direction. This data shows that my belief can be reached because the majority of people who participated in the survey said is wasn’t offensive. In my opinion, these names should be seen as mascots and people should respect the origins of how these successful teams got the Native American…

The article Mounting Mount Erie was written by a citizen and critic of the city of Erie, Cory Vaillancourt. He writes for a newspaper known as the Erie Reader. Although the title might seem funny to some people, this article is very serious. Some of the events that were written about are depressing and need to be changed. Corey Vaillancourt uses pathos, ethos, and logos throughout the article in order to describe what the real problems in Erie are and how bad the results will be if these problems go unaddressed.…

America is showing it doesn’t care. People with power are allowing discrimination to continue, with that said: 45% of Indians living on reservation report that the use of Native American Mascots contribute to discrimination (Price). This statistic taken from a survey done with Sports Illustrated tells us that the people that we supposedly are uplifting don’t think it’s uplifting. As a matter of fact Native Americans think that the mascots are contributing to discrimination. If we’re saying as a whole that the opinions of others do not matter, then, what message are we conveying to the world? We’re saying that as Americans, we’re being even more pompous than people already think we are. Also from a Sports Illustrated article a statement was given by Gross, “can’t remember a time when people on the reservation weren’t arguing about the team name, evenly divided between people who were proud of it and those who were ashamed.” (Price) This statement alone lets us know that this is a controversy.…

Ethics of Native American mascots is a controversial topic and should not be argued against because they are used ethically, complementary, and respectfully. The Native American Mascot controversy is a topic that has presented itself in recent years all across the country. Though there have been some issues, complaints, and moral questions brought up about the Native American mascot dilemma by a minority group of people, there is no legitimate argument to why these mascots should be banned.
