First, Tenochtitlan is a city that was built in a swamp. There was a temple in the center along with a city hall and on the out skirts were little areas for land to farm for a single family. Connecting the places were a series of big “bridges” connected by little planks of wood, which if they were attacked could be brought up by defenders so no one could pass and attack the city any more. City life involved carrying food into the main land, and basically repeating the process over and over. Ixtla’s Dad, the emperor, would not allow her to marry Popo, so the emperor decides which ever warrior in battle was the most victorious would be allowed to marry his daughter. Popo was most victorious, but other warriors got jealous and got back before Popo and told the emperor the lie, that Popo was dead. After Ixtla got the false news, she was devastated, and she killed herself. After Popo got back, he hunted down the liars and made a “temple” on the mountain and buried Ixtla, his love, in it. He told them to make another one on the other mountain and when he died he was buried in it. That’s how the mountains got their name, according to this
