The Watergate scandal was the first of its kind in United Stated history. The scandal created an uproar in the country between the people and most of all the government and the powers that be. President Nixon along with high ranking members of his staff at the time were have said to be involved in the stealing of equipment and cash and planting evidence on June of 1972. During this time some of Nixon's high ranking staff were charged with being involved with the incident. Others were either attempted to be fired by the President himself or resigned. Based on readings and research I do believe that President Nixon at the time was heavily involved in the Watergate scandal.
I also believe that he should have been held accountable for his actions. If this meant being put on trial and having the possibility of being impeached then so be it.
Many believed that if the former President was to be put on trial that this would cause a spiral of bad events within the government. I think this would have been good as it would show that no one is exempt from the law even high ranking titles such as the President of the United States.
•Did the pardon given to him by President Ford do more damage than good to our nation?
President Ford stated the pardon was given to "heal" the nation. I believe that it was to cover up and move past the wrong doings of President Nixon. I feel the pardon showed that even the President is exempt from the laws of the nation if need be.
I think big or small all people of all a levels should be held accountable for their actions. What have we as a nation learned from the Watergate scandal?
For me personally I believe as a nation we have learned that Presidents in a lot of cases are above the law. I also feel though that Nixon resigning took away from a constitutional uproar. The Watergate scandal was the first of different United States scandals that would follow.
