Our nation’s founding fathers put forth an amendment to the United States Constitution declaring that it is every American citizen’s sole right as a human being to practice whatever religion he pleases without repercussion from his government. Since then, the U.S has become a “melting pot” of a variety of cultures and religions. In fact, we have come to be known as the “nation of immigrants” in that the United States of America is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Our nation’s tolerance for religious freedom has resulted in an astonishing number of organized faiths about which most of us know little about. The lack of knowledge over our nation’s assortment of religious cultures can easily lead to unwarranted behavior and dire consequences. It only makes sense that we learn to understand our fellow man with whom we share this nation and this world. There is no better starting point for this transformation than with students at a high school level who are still at a formative age and are just beginning to grasp the world around them. Therefore, it should be required for all high school students to take a World Religions course in order to graduate.…

Religion, whether we realize it or not, is a major element of American society (and also worldwide history). For many, religion is a significant part of their cultural identity. Religion plays a part in all levels of politics and is often an aspect of community events and organizations. Everyday, we all interact with people who have different religious backgrounds and personal beliefs. Children born into religious families are very connected with their religions from birth and this affects the way they will see the world for the rest of their lives. Even those who later explore other faiths or convert to other religious ideas will be affected in subtle ways by their family religion. We are a product of our upbringing, no matter how our later life experiences or how the state may change us. Besides on a personal level, there is a consistent debate on whether religion should be present in the public school systems, or if it is against the state. A philosophical quote by Pope Benedict XVI (born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger) in an interview on religion versus the state includes, “A just laicism allows religious freedom. The state does not impose religion but rather gives space to religions with a responsibility toward civil society, and therefore it allows these religions to be factors in building up society” (Ratzing). Though this may seem like an inspiring idea, there are still debates on the subject.…

Religion has presented itself in society for as long as history has recorded life in societies, and many individuals still practice their faith. Yet, science has proven that allowing religion in lives affects and improves the quality of life. Public schools should allow religion because the presence increases test scores, results in better behavior, and leads to an overall happier life.…

Even though we have this separation, there have been debates for decades calling for changes. This argument is strongest when it comes to the public school system. There have been controversies over prayer in schools, teaching of evolution, and displaying the Ten Comandments. In the article “Does religion have a place in public schools?” it states, “Indeed, while public schools, which are run by the government, must allow students to express their own religious views, the First Amendment prevents the schools from endorsing religion or creating an environment that forces students to participate in religious exercises.” The only schools that are exempt from government laws are private schools. If we are really free to believe in whatever religion we choose then why aren't we able to pray in schools? Everyone in the United States has amendments that they have to obey.
