Should Romeo And Juliet Be Taught In High School

Should ninth graders be learning about Romeo and Juliet at their age? In high school, freshman are taught about the love story of Romeo and Juliet. There are many themes presented in the love story and it contributes to the life of a freshman. Some themes can include decision making, suicide, love, and romance. In my opinion, I think that Shakespeare should be taught in high school because it can teach students about the language used back then and give them a wider vocabulary, the situations in the story can be connected to everyone’s lives, and you can be taught many life lessons. My first reason that I used was that students can be taught about the language Shakespeare uses and they can also gain a wider vocabulary. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses old English or Anglo-Saxon. Old English is very different from modern English but isn’t that hard to learn. In act 1 scene 3, Lady Capulet says “Nurse, where’s my daughter? Call her forth to me.” In modern english it would have been: “Nurse, where’s my daughter? Tell her to come to me.” Although old English is no longer used, it teaches you a lot about how much our world has changed.
Some situations in the story can include love, marriage, death, mourn, decision making, separation, and guilt. Sometime in everyone’s lives they will experience these situations. Romeo and Juliet can teach you how to cope with the situation or how to avoid being stuck in the situation. One example of decision making is when Romeo went to a Capulet party to see Rosaline but instead he seen Juliet. Another example of decision making is when Romeo and Juliet finds out that their families are enemies. They had to decide whether they wanted to stay together or
