There is a controversial issue in regards to health care facilities not receiving funds upfront with using the self-pay method. Unfortunately, this approach often results in a cash flow crisis for the Organization due to patients failing to pay their costs. Not only can it cause detrimental effects to the business, but can also be a lot of hassle and time chasing after the clients to ensure that they submit payments. The California Sutter Health approach is a great solution to save money, and also provide a higher quality care to consumers.

With their hopes of expansion and targeted aim to reduce accounts receivables, they were able to develop somewhat of a fundamental goal to help make life easier for themselves, while still focusing on the clients and the services which they provide. This approach was not a quick fix and involved a lot of strategic planning. With the success of this new program, it’s unbelievable to see how much of a cost difference in collections were made directly by making efforts to collect payments from patients at their initial point of entry before services were administered. This approach also opened the eyes for a lot of other health care providers by setting the example. Besides the management team, the Patient Financial Services team and registration staff deserves a lot of kudos simply because they are the ones who dealt directly with the patients and had the opportunity to be part of this successful approach at first hand. This method provided many insights about issues within their previous system that may be helpful towards bringing to light for other health providers as well. However, with all of these useful incentives, curiosity was raised regarding the wages paid to the PFS and registration Staff. The California Sutter health was able to implement these new and advanced changes to staff without the need to increase their earnings. However, this approach may not apply so smoothly towards other health care providers. Through my personal experience, most employees bear the mindset that the more work they have to perform, the more money they should get paid.
