The issue with today's Constitution is that it does not let states formally and peacefully secede. "California’s many minority Republicans... would push at once to formally institutionalize decentralized government," and march on Sacramento[1]. This may make the government of California fall. Who is going to rule the newly-born country if the government has already fallen?
Moreover, California has nearly the world's sixth largest economy[1]. If the California secede from the Union, and the Republic get divided into six regions, the economical benefits of the state will not be equally shared between the six regions. If each one of the six regions become an independent country, they will have different economical looks. At that time, there will be no national government to fund the state with Federal Money. California can stand perfectly well if it stays as one nation, and solve the cultural issues within the state, but not if it divides[1].
I do not think seceding from the country would be a good option, but dividing the state into 6 different states would be a great option for both the people and the government of California. The state of California consists of people with different mindsets in the southern and northern parts of the state who can not get along together. Seceding would hurt the state, but dividing into six regions inside the Union would
