Before I get started let me tell you some history about the Pledge of Allegiance and how it was made. Over 100 years ago, when the pledge was created, there was no words or reference to God and religion. In 1954, during the Cold War, congress added the words “Under God” to the pledge of Allegiances to take a way the US system from the atheism of Communist system. Everyone was fine with it back then, but it all changes about 15 years ago. In 2002 the Phrase “ Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiances was challenged by a man named Michael Newdow who is a emergency medicine physician, and an atheist man (Nina Totenberg reporter) This is where it starts, the arguments and the confusion, should the words “ Under God” be used in the Pledge of Allegiances. Like I implied in the previous paragraph Dr. Newdow challenged the pledge because his daughter was “forced” to say “under god” while saying the Pledge( Michael Newdow). Mr. Newdow took it to court and won in the lower court. Many say he shouldn’t of won because he only has primary custody of his daughter. …show more content…
That’s not much to consider if his daughter should listen or not, because his daughter live with their mother and not with their father. ( Justice John Paul Stevens) Michael had no right to act on his daughter representative in court, because the mother supports the reciting of the pledge of allegiances.
If you don’t want your kids to recite the pledge, write a note to the teacher and tell them to not have your kid recite it or say the word “under god” the teacher of any school forces a student to say, recite the pledge. There was a case called West Virginia VS. Barnett where is states that no kid is forced to say the pledge, It still applies to this day. It would be a shame if the took out the words Under God out of the pledge. Once its out of the pledge then out of schools, not praying during graduations or anything people one man can’t write a little note to the teacher saying my child can’t say under god while reciting the pledge can you not have them say that. No he couldn’t do that he had to take it to court for someone to tell him he’s right. ( Totenberg)
What does one nation under god really mean. Why does it really matter to people about what we say about the pledge. Now a day so many people get offended about the littlest thing, Because someone says under god in the pledge and you don’t believe in it don’t say it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and some people may take your opinion as helpful or full of crap. Your opinion on the flag is just a opinion not a fact. A fact if where in history how thomas Jefferson added it into the pledge. It’s in there for a reason not just because we needed extra words, because he wanted to( Barry Lynn).
(Jamie Lynn) “Yes, I’m angered by this, with everything, first it was the monument then “In God we trust” now the pledge of allegiance.”
Before 9/11 everyone was acting this way like hey god shouldn’t be in this its offencive or why should god be in things we have a say in what we want and what is says. Whenever 9/11 happened people were praying and saying God Bless you God Bless you because when problem occurs, they go straight to go to help them with their problems. (Jamie Lynn) Wants to start a petition on how she feels as a believer that her rights may have been violated. All this is going to do is cause a big fuss and argument with the believers and non believers. If the believers win the non believers will cause a problem take it to court yell, brake things and everything. If the non believers win then, the believers will cause the big fuss and why should the government have to pick a side if it’s just going to go into a big mess.
Mr. Newbow was in the courtroom pleading his case about about the pledge but then Mr.Newbow Goes off and talks about our National Motto. Should we we freak out about this guy always trying to talk “under god” out of the pledge but then goes food and wants to take “in god we trust” out of our money or motto. Why should anyone have a say in it because apparently one atheist man can change it because he’s offended ( Naylor).
Everyone gets offended on something, I may get offended on the shirt someone is wear, I’m not going to take it court, I’m not because it’s dumb. Taking something to court because that person gets offended is outraged why. The argument about the pledge went straight back to history, should history be the answer and call it quits, not exactly.
There is this mother of two girls who went through middle school and high school in Georgia. They all moved to Denver, where they said religion wasn’t that big of an issue in the schools. Apparently the girl felt very uncomfortable about saying “ Under God” when saying the Pledge of Allegiance. During the time they were in school they have special programs where they pray for people, and I’m sure they didn’t want to feel different. They bow their head and started praying you know. They didn’t believe it but they didn’t want to be the people who doesn’t believe and be left out and would be treated different because of it. The pledge bothered the girls also the parents, there was so much pressure on kids to be like everyone else and the girls are scared to be left out. So they do it and they don’t like it. Our country is majority of Christians. “The country was built on having the freedom and not sending the messages that there’s one way of thinking.”(Ann)
Many people think that if you don’t believe don’t say “Under God” this is the point where everyone is stuck at. For the kids is it that they are pressured by their peers? Maybe the kids do think that way were if you don’t say it that you’ll be pointed out as weird or something worse they’ll get mad fun of, maybe even bullied(Naylor)?
I’m a religion person and a strong one at that. I’m not sure i understand this situation. If they take it out the words ‘In God We Trust” or “Under God” it won’t change what I believe in or who I believe in. My belief will stay the same no matter what happens(Steven).
According to Professor Alan Wolfe, No one really wants this case to continue or for it to start in the first place. This is a very very bad case to hold because it just seems like it’s a really sort of “symbolic” issue. Most people get to attached to this question and blow it straight out of proportion. You get sucked in to the symbol, after that people think they can just put there two cent of beliefs to the supreme court. “I think that we could find much better cases to deal with this,”(Wolfe)
Wow, so many opinions on the pledge, how will anyone get over the fact that someone can change the outlook on something that’s been there for over 50 years.
My opinion my not be the one anyone wants to here because I’m a high school but I have one. Yes, I understand that forcing kids into saying the pledge is crazy but write a note to the teacher or principal and say I don’t what my kid say this or that. I am one hundred percent positive that that school won’t force your kid into saying it. The man Mr. Newbow took it to court on how it’s very offensive to him, well there is a lot of offensive think in this world to me but I’m not going to be childish and take it to court. The real reason why took it is probably because he hates the fact that god is in it and he doesn’t believe in that, “God” so everyone has to go through it because he wants to prove there’s no
god.
I’m a Christian and I believe in the pledge, the pledge isn’t a prayer or any of that the history states that it’s not a prayer. If the supreme court really does take it out it won’t change anything for me I’m still going to believe, read the bible everything. That one thing won’t change anything, Christians will still be Christians and atheist people will still be atheist and so one. So whatever they decide wont change a thing.
