a boy and a sickness. In a day’s wait, the boys father goes outside and takes a walk on his walk he tries shooting coveys. (Hemingway, 300) A version of this happened in a stolen day as well when the boy stays home from school and goes fishing. (Anderson, 309.) This shows that in each story the narrator was trying to kill or catch an animal. Each boy from both stories has a family. Schatz has his father and the boy from a stolen day has his siblings and his parents. Also, in each story the main characters mention school. For example, according to schatz, “At school in France the boys...” .(Hemingway,302) This quote shows that school was had some part in a day’s wait. Then, the boy in a stolen day, admits that, “on my way to school” (Anderson,305). This quote shows that school was also involved in a stolen day. yet another similarity is that in each story the children experience a misunderstanding. Like in a day’s wait when schatz misunderstood and got the fahrenheit and celsius scale mixed up ( Hemingway, 302) and in a stolen day the main character misunderstands and believes his family hates him. (Anderson, 308) the last similarity is that each story has some pictures included on certain pages, such as 299,300, and 309. First, Out of both boys, one of them is very sick and the other one is faking being sick.
Another difference is that in a day's wait, schatz states to his father, "You don't have to stay in here with me, Papa, if it bothers you." (Hemingway,300) This is significant because in the other story the boy wants attention from his family and schatz does not. A further difference is that one of the boys stays inside the whole day and the other goes home, fishing, and to school. Like how in a stolen day the main character suggests that he has inflammatory rheumatism and still heads to the pond and school. (Anderson,308). In addition one other difference is that in one of the stories the boys mother takes care of him and in the other the father takes care of the boy. For instance in a day's wait the father calls the doctor and gives Schatz his medicine. This is shown in the quote from the text, “ Downstairs, the doctor left three different medicines in different-colored capsules with instructions for giving them. One was to bring down the fever, another a purgative,1 the third to overcome an acid condition.” (Hemingway, 300) One more difference between both stories is that the theme is different. In a stolen day the theme is family because he begins to have family problems and the theme in a day's wait is home because he feel comfortable and stays at his home throughout the entire story. Lastly both stories have different authors. The story a day's wait was written and
illustrated by Ernest Hemingway and the second story, titled a stolen day has an author namen Sherwood anderson. To sum it up, As you can tell each story has its many similarities and many differences from each other. Between a day’s wait and a stolen day, each text or story are both about a boy who is involved with a sickness. Even though in a day’s wait the boy or main character is truly very sick and in a stolen day the boy or main character is trying to fake being sick to get out of school and so that he can go fishing. Over all, the two stories can include similarities and differences in character traits, plot, setting theme, tone mood, and more.
