They are necessary for normal sexual development of the female and for regulation of the menstrual cycle during the childbearing years. Androgens are produced by the body in greater amounts in males. However, androgens are also present in females in small amounts." For males, some side effects of using anabolic steroids would be acne, oily skin and hair, hair loss, liver, kidney and heart disease. For females, some sides effects of using anabolic steroids would be hair loss, acne, oily skin and hair, and an increase in male characteristics (lower voice, breast atrophy, and an increase in facial hair growth). Anabolic steroids mimic the effects of testosterone (e.g. androgenic) As the testosterone suppresses, many of men's testicles shrink, and a decrease in sperm production. They are usually prescribed to help men who don’t have enough natural testosterone and certain types of anemia.
