Signed Pacts
In addition, the popularization of signed pacts between the sinner and the Satan reveals another reason why he was able to keep having such great influence over people for so many years. The alleged written pacts were also used in trials of heretics and witches to prove their guilt. The pacts helped to demonize all the heretics and other people who did not adhere to the norms. Once again the fear of the unknown worked hand in hand with the Devil; much like today, the mass have a natural opposition against strangers; even more so nowadays as we are more isolated and do not have the same community life as before. The Devil was and is still associated with all the people not viewed as good Christian or on the contrary viewed as threats to the …show more content…

Even nowadays, the principle of evil that is the Devil still remains; some would argue that his existence is mostly rendered obsolete and false by the standard of modern science but “in fact, the Devil’s existence is no less likely now than it ever was. Society’s assumptions, styles, and prejudices have changed – and will change again – but the underlying problem of evil remains the same.” As argued earlier, the close association of the figure of Satan to the inherent fears of humanity coupled with its incredible ability to adapt to any situation make the Devil quite resistant in the face of change. Some people would have thought that he would have disappeared as we entered the Modern Period, however the fact that the presence of evil will never go away makes the figure of Satan crucial to the population. It is the nature of humans to search and find the cause of an incomprehensible event like a war or a …show more content…

The Devil provides a point of focus for all our fears as well as an outlet to deal with those issues. Upon looking into the roots of the creation of the Satan into the Old Testament as well as the description and characteristics associated to it, we can find the reasons for the great adaptability of the figure of Satan. so merciful, why do people have to fear him? Are we to believe there is nowhere we can turn to escape fear? If you have to fear God, why not be "Satan fearing" and at least have the fun that being God fearing denies you?” (45) This novel excerpt from The Satanic Bible plays around with the term “god fearing” and, in a way, mocks some of the church’s teachings. Most of us grow up believing that the cosmic battle between God and the devil is representative of good and evil, god being good and the devil being evil. However, this is can bring about some confusion when you look at the…

It seems as though in today’s age and time that Satan’s existence is more real and prevalent not only among society, but among Christians, as well. Nonetheless, it must be recognized that in earlier times evil was not only real but palpable. This paper will look at evil as it is portrayed in two different works -- Dante's Divine Comedy, and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales -- and analyze what the nature of evil meant to each of these authors. The Divine Comedy is an epic poem in which the author, Dante, takes a visionary journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. The purpose of Dante's visit to Hell is to learn about the true nature of evil.…

While Satan’s humane emotions were demonstrated earlier in the narrative, his soliloquy further explicates the complexity of his thoughts. Throughout the first few books, Satan does not demonstrate any vulnerabilities. He is glorified as an obstinate and prideful Spirit who surpasses all others in Hell and who knows exactly what he yearns. Though Satan’s abilities are of no question, this one-sided view of Satan – that he is a competent and powerful devil – appears lacking; therefore, the demonstration of Satan’s vulnerability in his soliloquy is a progression in his character development. Satan finally senses “horror and doubt,” and is drenched in grief by his “remembrance from what state [he] fell” (4:17, 38-39). This is the first time Satan is described to have self-doubt, and specifically, in…

“I can’t imagine loving someone so much you’d do anything they asked. Even if that happened to be murder.” (384) Murder is never acceptable, but in Jodi Picoult’s novel The Pact, Picoult explores ‘murder/suicide’ from a different point of view, love. On Thursday, 7th February, guest lecturer Cimminnee Holt came to present the Church of Satan, founded in 1966 in San Francisco, California by Anton Szandor LaVey. Information found in this response paper is based on her article Death and Dying in the Satanic Worldview in the Journal of Religion and Culture, vol. 22/1 (2011) and on the slides that she presented. The members of this church are atheists called Satanists. LaVey wrote The Satanic Bible in 1969, which gives a good idea of what Satanism is about. He died in 1997 and was succeeded by Peter H. Gilmore who is the current high priest. It is regarded as one of the New Religious Movement (NRM). Theirs sombre looks creates misconceptions but they have an interesting perspective of life and death. Ms. Holt demonstrates in her works how instead of focusing on the afterlife, they focus on their existence.…
