Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most destructive plays that exhibits an abundance of darkness and other themes. To set a dark atmosphere, darkness is established by powerful imagery throughout the play. Darkness is expressed by the witches, weather, as well as Macbeth and lady Macbeth’s actions.
Shakespeare uses the witches for creating dark and evil imagery. In Macbeth’s first confrontation with the witches, they release darkness within him. The witches made Macbeth kill Duncan with their wicked ways. Banquo tells Macbeth that the witches are “instruments of darkness” (Shakespeare, 1, 3, 24). Banquo means the witches are agents of evil and can lead to Macbeth’s downfall. The witches set the atmosphere of darkness at the commencement of the play. The witches meet and say “He shall live a man forbid: Weary se’nnigths, nine times nine, Shall he dwindle, peak, and pine” (1, 3, 21-23). In this quote the witches are cursing an innocent man because his wife would not share her chestnuts. That creates imagery as the witches set a dark atmosphere and prove that they are evil.
