Significance Of Technology In The Sound Of Thunder

Technological Threats In the story “The Sound of Thunder” written by Ray Bradbury, the author develops the idea that technology can be a significant threat throughout the story. Shown in the story is many of the consequences of technology’s misuse and our participation in the things we are not meant to investigate. Clearly displayed is the severe negative effects some advanced technology could have on our lives. Even from the very start of this story, the idea of technology being a danger is clearly identifiable from the reader’s perspective. For example, once Eckels reaches the past with the safari group, the guide Travis is already explaining the potential dangers and what to avoid, stating, “Say we accidentally kill one mouse here. That means that all the future families of this one particular mouse are destroyed, right?” (Bradbury 226). Travis displays one of the consequences of tampering with technology by developing the idea that it will have consequences onmany future generations if one family is destroyed. There would be no need for this warning if the time machine technology was not dangerous. The idea that technology can be dangerous is also developed by the fact that Eckels is not guaranteed to come back alive. When Eckels inquires if it is ensured that he will return from the safari alive, the man at the desk states, “We guarantee nothing, except the dinosaurs.” (Bradbury 222). The story
