The name of this book is SilverFin. This spy novel was written by Charlie Higson. I personally quite enjoyed reading this book as it was full of suspense and it was exciting. In this essay I intend to discuss the plot, the setting, the characterisation, the development of the characters and the themes. At the end I will also write a little conclusion on what I thought about this book.
In part 1 of the book, James Bond starts at Eton. He is a bit suspicious of an American bully three years older than him, George Hellebore. For spring break, James goes to Scotland to visit his aunt and uncle. Bond finds out that George’s dad, Lord Randolph Hellebore owns a large castle beside Loch Silverfin and he goes to investigate. He ends up getting knocked out and when he regains consciousness he is tied to a table and Lord Hellebore begins to interrogate him. Hellebore goes on to tell him that his target is to create better and stronger soldiers using “Silverfin serum”. He ends up drugging Bond but he uses his enhanced abilities to escape from his cell that he was put in after getting drugged and the castle. He later returns with George to destroy Lord Hellebore’s lab as George doesn’t agree with what his father is doing. Lord Hellebore tries to kill them both but he is the one that ends up dying. In the end George moves back to America to live with his mum and Bond’s uncle dies of cancer.
This novel is set in Eton, where Bond went to school, and Scotland, where he goes to visit his aunt and uncle for spring break and where his big adventure starts. It is set in 1933 when James Bond is only 13 years old. The fact that most of the story is based in a castle makes it quite scary, mysterious and very tense. It also shows us that because it is in a big castle there is quite a lot of money involved in Lord Hellebore’s project. The author explores various different themes such as mystery, suspense, protection and perseverance.
