Similarities And Differences: Growing Up In The United States

Growing up in the United States has similarities and differences from Egypt. There differences in ethics, morals, and values. Traditional Islamic ideologies are predominant beliefs in Egypt. There is not as much religious diversity in Egypt as there is in the United States. Since the majority of Egypt has the same religious and cultural values, this reinforces the norms, attitudes, and stereotypes. In the United States the society holds a more egalitarian ideology. Americans have greater equality in social relations, status, and social mobility. With that being said, there is an overall significant difference in the treatment of females compared to males. This concept is demonstrated by the scoring of the 2014 Global Gender Gap Index 2014.
Although there is more of s liberal mindset in the United States, sometimes the traditional family household still exists. Many conventional ideologies that my parents hold are similar to traditional Islamic attitudes. I was raised in an American household where my mom was a stay at home mother and my father worked outside of the home. My father worked outside the home and made the money while my mother stayed at home and took care of the children, cooked, and did the housework. Research by Mensch, Ibrahim, Lee, & El-Gibaly (2003) supports the idea that unless economic opportunities expand considerably, girls as well as boys may continue to see value in the traditional arrangements in which women offer men obedience in re- turn for economic support. There is a significant difference between the social life of a female in the United States and Egypt. In the United States I had cross sex friendships, which is frowned upon in Egypt. In contrast to common practice in Egypt, my parents did not arrange a marriage for me in the United States.
