There once was a young boy named Adonis, Adonis was a slave. He did not mind being a slave, it was the only life he knew, after all he had a bed to sleep on, food to eat, clothes to wear. He didn’t think it was that bad. He lived in Ancient Rome, with two other slaves, and his master. His master’s name was Arthur, Arthur treated Adonis well, and received Adonis, and his sister as gifts when Adonis was just a young boy. The two other slaves were both women, one was named Alexa, Alexa was very kind, and pretty, Alexa was Adonis’s sister, and they got along well, but not great. The other slave in the villa was named Carmin, she was old, but very smart, and caring, Carmin had known Alexa and Adonis there whole lives, and acted as a mother to both of them. Adonis was a tall, strong boy, he wasn’t exactly sure when his birthday was, but he had been a slave almost his whole life, which was about 16 years, So he came to the conclusion that he was 16 years old. However as he got older he had a more and more negative outlook, on life, and disliked being a slave more and more.

of jobs, rinsing dishes, feeding Arthur’s pets, cleaning the floors, and many more. He didn’t understand at all why he had to clean the floors if they would simply get dirty again. One day as he was feeding Arthur’s pet cat, he overheard Arthur and his daughter talking about how slaves can fight against other slaves, or animals for the chance to win their freedom back, and their master would receive money. Adonis had just heard the conversation and went on with his day. Later that day he thought more about what he heard, although he didn’t consider the consequences.
Later that week Adonis saw a dead gladiator being rolled away in a cart. This scared Adonis, and the image of the bloody, ripped gladiator lingered in his head. He thought about that image for the rest of the week. After taking many things into consideration, ultimately he decided a life without freedom was not a life worth living. This still left one problem. . . what would he do without Carmin, and Alexa.
At this point Adonis was certain that he wanted to be a gladiator. He had three more things to do before fighting, first he had to ask his master, and then if his master said yes he would inform Carmin, and Alexa, and lastly he had to train. He asked his master if it was okay for him to fight, and although he said yes, his master laughed at him, he said “If you win that fight I’ll let you Carmin and Alexa go free, There is no chance you’ll win” this was a perfect answer for Adonis, however his master’s confidence intimidated him. He had thought of many different ways to tell Carmin, and Alexa but he ended up just sitting them both down, and telling them. Their initial reaction was surprised, but once the information had settled, they both had different responses, Carmin agreed with Adonis, and liked the idea. However Alexa did not want Adonis to risk his life for a better one. They determined that Adonis would fight, and that Carmin would help him train.
Alexa, and Carmin had been eating less, and giving their food to Adonis. Adonis had been working out when he could, and had been training with Carmin, but even still was not very confident. It had finally come to the night before the fight and Adonis knew he was fighting a human, not an Animal. This did make Adonis feel better about the fight, however he was still incredibly nervous. That night he went to bed very early and drank a lot of wine because he had already been considering not fighting.
Adonis woke up and got ready, he walked to the colosseum that morning, and Carmin had come with him.
Alexa could not come and watch, she was too nervous. Adonis had walked into the colosseum, there was a long hallway, full of slaves, and cells holding animals. At the end of the hallway were three racks, one holding many different helmets all varying in shapes, and sizes. Another rack held shields, some were big others were small, and some even had spikes in the center. The third rack had all sorts of weapons, spears, swords, axes, all slightly different. He picked a big, heavy helmet, a medium sized shield with a few spikes on it, they were sharper than a falcons beak, and he picked a shiny sword, it was about 3 feet long. There were 2 fights before his, and he felt more scared than he had ever felt. One of the two previous gladiators had died, and the other had
won.
He stepped out into the arena, it was a large area, the ground was very firm, and dusty. His opponent was about the same size as him. At first not much happened, they were both slowly circling around the arena, but once the crowd started to boo, and Adonis though about Alexa, and Carmin, and starting moving toward his opponent. They were pretty close but neither sword could reach each other’s opponent. Adonis’s opponent had said to Adonis “you can still run away, and you’ll keep your life”. This made Adonis very mad, he immediately swung his sword, and just missed. His opponent then hit Adonis’s shield with his axe, Adonis sliced his opponent’s leg, and then they both backed away. All of the sudden his opponent charged towards Adonis and swung his axe at Adonis’s arm, he had cut his arm deeply, and blood was slowly coming out, Adonis swiped his sword at his opponent’s neck, although it was not precisely where he had aimed, it slit his opponent’s throat. His opponent fell to his knees with blood coming out of his neck at an alarming rate, Adonis had won the battle. The crowd was cheering, and Carmin was screaming with joy. Adonis felt happy, but he felt 1,000 times more guilt than happiness.
Adonis, Carmin, and Alexa, had found a small home. They made some money from growing and selling plants, and vegetables. Adonis’s arm was in bad condition and had turned red around the wound. Adonis had died a few weeks after the fight. However Carmin and Alexa lived with their pet sheep, and lived free for the rest of his life.
