As well as sharing the
similarity of anti-war, they also share the idea of innocent lives lost in the war. In ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ it is shown when it says ‘To children ardent for some desperate glory’ which suggests that young people who weren’t old enough, lied to help in the war because they wanted recognition. It also says in ‘Mametz Wood’, ‘the wasted young’ which backs up the idea of young people signing up to help with the war effort. When it says ‘Wasted’ in ‘Mametz Wood’ it suggests that their lives were used carelessly with no purpose other than to die. Also when it says ‘desperate glory’ it suggests to us that the young people who signed up, thought that they couldn't get any praise for anything other than risking their life at such a young age and give up a life that they haven't been able to live just for some appreciation.
Although there are many similarities there is also quite a few differences. The main difference, I think, is that ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ give a descriptive account of dying in war. This is shown by using unpleasant simile like ‘coughing like hags’ it show that they are weak and out of control. Also they use the words ‘stumbling’, ‘gargling’ and ‘plunges’ to gain a reaction to the dreadful event.
In ‘Mametz Wood’ they disrespect the war and its soldiers to gain a reaction. They use ‘their skeletons paused in mid-macabre’ as a way of showing they died in a odd way as using the mexican dance as something we can imagine easily. They also use ‘a broken mosaic’ to describe the bones which points the reader into thinking their bones were a beautiful, artistic sights, which in my opinion sounds morbid and unnecessary.
