DANFORTH: How dare that be said. There is the Devil in Salem. People in this town are being harmed, and it is the fault of all those Devil agents locked up in the gaol.
HATHORNE: But the deeds we are doing are reprehensible. Look what we are putting through these people. We say that those who are accused are assumed guilty and forced to confess and failure to do so are executed. We are killing people and destroying the names of many and suppressing their respect. There are no lawyers for the fairness of those accused. The trials are biased and the accusations are fallacious.
DANFORTH: You are wrong! I am doing the work of God. I am helping Salem, we are demanding the …show more content…
truth. We are gathering all the devilish people in Salem and executing them.
HATHORNE: But those who we accused are Rebecca Nurse, Elizabeth and John Proctor.
These are people with good names in Salem. These are upright and honest people. They have done no such unrighteousness and have certainly not been along the Devil. They are extremely distinguished and respected people in Salem.
DANFORTH: That is of no importance Hathorne, the Devil is disingenuous and can fool even the most righteous man. Abigail Williams and the girls know that those people have been with the Devil.
HATHORNE: This is nonsense, can it not be seen that Abigail is a remorseless liar and a wretched manipulative juvenile who spreads destruction and the death of innocents wherever she goes. Eighty-eight people we have accused of and five people dead because of Abigail and the nonsense she is.
DANFORTH: Abigail Williams tells the truth and is incapable of lying
HATHORNE: When Hale was trying to prove Abigail’s false accusations, she immediately pretended that a bird’s spirit was flying around the room and harming her. She did not want to be proved wrong. When I demanded to talk to her afterwards, she alluded the fact that the trials were deceitful and the allegations of witchcraft were
lies!
DANFORTH: She said this?
HATHORNE: She conveyed it.
DANFORTH: Mankind must be protected from this knowledge.
HATHORNE: She is controlling the courtroom, not us.
DANFORTH: I am the deputy governor of Massachusetts and the presiding judge at the witch trials, not is Abigail Williams.
HATHORNE: She says a name and the person immediately goes to gaol.
DANFORTH: We are simply trying to protect the village.
HATHORNE: We are causing social disruption and misusing the power given to us Danforth. We are bringing tragedy upon the town.
DANFORTH: You are wrong. We are in charge of this mayhem we are in charge of this town. We are demanding harmony to these troubled people.
HATHORNE: You are right we have control! We can stop this hysteria. We can end the trials and end the death and confinement of innocents.
DANFORTH: No, we must abide by and finish this. My duty and authority is to prosecute witches.
HATHORNE: We cannot continue to encourage this tragedy of social disruption and the breakdown of our communal solidarity. We can change this mess that we dogged this society into. We can resolve our mistakes. We can release all the prisoners.
DANFORTH: On no circumstances! My preserved dignity and stature would be ruined likewise. People have already been charged and killed, I would be seen as a fool and lose my good job. We have fallen prey to little girl’s foolish lies. We will next be hung by our necks.
HATHORNE: Danforth we must sacrifice ourselves to help Salem
DANFORTH: At no time but I will accuse you next of witchcraft if you threaten my trials.
